American, Korean American or Italian American?[edit]

This article previously identified Joseph Kahn as a Korean American as well as having incorrect information about his early life. Kahn's personal website's biography, his twitter, and a Washington Post article states that he spent a part of his childhood in Italy and afterwards, he moved to America at the age of seven. I've corrected this part about his early life, formerly stating he lived in Korea until moving to America at the age of three. On January 24th, 2018 some of his tweets contains criticism about his Wikipedia page which identified him as a "Korean American" filmmaker.[1] He seems to criticize being identified as a Korean American based on the notion that he was born there and implies that he barely lived there. He mentions that he spent part of his childhood growing up in Italy, and that technically, by this logic, he would be an Italian American filmmaker, and that Tim Burton would be a identified as a "Burbank American" filmmaker by this logic as well. Another editor believes that this is Kahn stating that he identifies as an Italian American, however I interpret it differently, that on the contrary, he is criticizing the notion of himself as being identified as any type of Hypenated American. He doesn't identify as an Italian American (or Korean American) just as much as he wouldn't identify Tim Burton as a "Burbank American." I've also read some of his interviews. He rarely mentions his time in Italy, nor makes any references concerning Italian culture, history and society, or has any discussion as being an Italian American.

Based on his personal website's biography, interviews, and his recent tweets, I've concluded that it would best to state Joseph Kahn as an American film and music video director, no hyphenation needed. Many other Wikipedia articles on people born outside of America, but have lived in America for most of their life, drops the ethic/national hyphenated categorization as well, for instance, the article on Jhumpa Lahiri. Another editor believes Joseph Kahn should be identified as an Italian American on his wikipedia page. I've opened this section on the talk page to discuss with any editors on what to identify him as and to resolve a dispute with another editor who is consistently editing that Kahn is an Italian American. If this discussion isn't resolved, or continued, or my edits continue to be reverted, we can open this up to a Third Opinion or RtC. Aprisosi (talk) 05:54, 22 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
