Name[edit]

What is this person's surname? We do not have an article for him on the Spanish Wikipedia, the Spanish biography of Davy Crockett refers to him as "Peña". The Spanish biography of Manuel de Falla describes him as "Falla". PatGallacher (talk) 17:59, 24 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

A few places do list him as Pena[1] but the majority of the English-language sources I've found refer to him as "de la Pena". For example, Bill Groneman wrote a book called Defense of a Legend: Crockett and the de la Pena Diary and the description of the translation of the purported diary also refers to him as de la Pena [2]. This could very well be their own ignorance of Spanish naming practices, but when I created this article I chose to use the format most common in English-language sources.. In general, WP articles should use whatever name the subject is most commonly known by (WP:MOSBIO and WP:NAMEPEOPLE). This means that people are sometimes referred to be their pseudonym (for example, Nora Roberts) rather than their legal name. In many cases, names have been translated into English, so that version is used (Charles III of Spain rather than Carlos III). The vast majority of the English-language sources refer to him as "de la Pena", so in my opinion that is what the article should use on the English encyclopedia. This convention, to use the name by which the person is most commonly known in English, only applies to the titles of biographies. The convention in relation to the main body of an article is just that they should normally use the surname. I suggest that, all things being equal, brevity is preferred, and since the whole purpose of an encyclopedia is to educate it should show a degree of sensitivity for foreign naming conventions. I don't feel comfortable using a format that is not supported by the sources. If the sources misspelled a surname all the time, I'd have to use the misspelling (this has actually been an issue with names like Kimbell/Kimball). Otherwise does that verge on original research?
