Spelling[edit]

How come it was never renamed "Jonesboro" by the Board of Geographic Names? 81.153.111.87 13:44, 20 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

It was. It was officially known as "Jonesboro" for a very long time, in fact, but the people there never liked it, and changed the spelling back to the original one in 1982. I remember when it happened. The town even made bumper stickers that said "Put the 'ugh' back in Jonesboro". Jsc1973 06:32, 7 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Lede image[edit]

If anyone has a "skyline" photograph of Jonesborough, feel free to place it as the lede image, and move the courthouse to the gallery. I'm sure there are good angles from the surrounding hills, but I didn't have time to look for one. A photograph of a fancy "Welcome to Jonesborough" sign or similar entrance sign would also work. External Links & the brick mess[edit]

All the external links to news stories about the Veteran's Park bricks ought to be converted to references in the new section, or removed from the article. I'd make the attempt, but I'd personally be inclined to just delete the whole brick mess as not being notable enough -- Foetusized (talk) 14:10, 10 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Good idea. I've removed the whole section. Bms4880 (talk) 22:01, 10 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Addition to Recreation section[edit]

Added a brief mention of Jonesborough Repertory Theater as an example to my students. I teach composition at ETSU and I have assigned my classes to edit a Wikipedia entry to which they can add something useful. This seemed a safe, inoffensive example. false accusations, Historic Jonesborough, etc.[edit]

Sorry to bother the current and future editors following this article, but it seems this article is to be added to a long list of articles where I have edited where long-time adversary Orlady follows and finds fault. I don't get her motivation. This to explain some back and forth editing on this article which you may see.

1. I added mention of the NRHP listing in 1969 of the Jonesboro Historic District, which she then disputed, adding a silly citation needed tag. As she is well aware from long discussion at the article for that district, it is NRHP listed, that is factual, it is not seriously in doubt.

2. I added general mention of the fact that "A larger area has been promoted as "Historic Jonesborough" since then", to which she added a wp:OR tag and/or removed it in subsequent edits. In one edit summary, Orlady stated that it "is speculation and synthesis, including the concepts of "larger," "promoted as," and "since then." Not merely an issue of needing a citation."

Orlady has read numerous webpages of the Historic Jonesborough organization, which I believe was created after 1969 and which certainly has promoted a larger area than the NRHP-listed historic district as Historic Jonesborough since then. It is a fact, not even a controversial one that the organization has promoted an area since 1969, that the area is larger than the NRHP-listed historic district. The Historic Jonesborough webpages mention the historic district but do not name it, and they are i-think-deliberately vague on the boundaries of the district but nonetheless adequately imply that the Historic Jonesborough area is larger. Further, I have verified the facts by reading the NRHP nom document which identifies the area of the historic district, and compared that Historic Jonesborough documents promoting inns and motels inside and outside of that district.

I don't think this amounts to wp:SYNTH which is original research, to be avoided as perhaps it might advance a controversial POV position. I believe the current article no longer mentions Historic Jonesborough, which ought to be given pretty salient coverage in the history of this town, for its actions to preserve and promote the town.

3. Orlady changes the name of the historic district to display as "Jonesborough Historic District" rather than to display as the name it was given in the NRHP listing, "Jonesboro Historic District". That change is possibly implementing wp:OR, as there appear not to be evidence the NRHP listing name is changed. There is discussion ongoing in a requested move at Talk:Jonesboro Historic District (Jonesborough, Tennessee); I think the official, original name should be displayed here unless and until there is a different resolution at the article on the district itself.

Perhaps other editors would like to comment on what are the facts, and/or to step in to fix up the article. Or perhaps you all would prefer to avoid this. Again, sorry to have brought dispute to here. --doncram 21:06, 15 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Trying to keep yr personal issues out of this, here's my issues with "A larger area has been promoted as "Historic Jonesborough" since then."
  1. It followed the sentence stating that the Historic District was established in 1968, which makes it sounds like the use of "Historic Jonesborough" started that year. That might be the case, but I have no idea when that happened. I'm not even sure if it was ever officially adopted, or just came to be.
  2. You seem to think that there is some "larger area" of Jonesborough that is promoted as "Historic Jonesborough." I guess there is, since the town is larger than the historic district. The city as a whole promotes itself as "Historic Jonesborough." The whole town, as the first town in the state, is historic. In some ways, the town functions as an historic district; there's a law against "demolition through neglect" that applies to the whole town, not any particular section or area.
Incidentally, I drove through Jonesborough the other day. The "wite text on brown" sign I remember from years past pointing the way toward the Historic District, from what used to be the only red light in town, is no longer there. Currently there's a sign with the text "Welcome to" above a logo for "Historic Jonesborough", and under that is an arrow pointing south, next to the words "Historic District." There's only one historic district in town, so there's not a real need to distinguish it from any other historic districts. -- Foetusized (talk) 21:42, 15 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Oldest town?[edit]

This article says it was the oldest town in TN, but the article for Rogersville, Tennessee says that town was founded in 1775, four years older than Jonesborough. Why's that? --AW (talk) 15:24, 31 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

The Rogersville article does not say it was founded in 1775, it says the first settlers arrived in 1775. The land that is now downtown Rogersville belonged to those first settlers, the Crocketts, until they sold it to Col. Thomas Amis around 1780. Rogersville was founded in 1789 according to the article for Joseph Rogers, Col. Amis' son-in-law -- Foetusized (talk) 17:21, 31 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Ah, thanks --AW (talk) 02:17, 2 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
