New sections[edit]

I added a few new sections to the article including events, crime, fire, police, and city council. Shouldn't there be at least a mention of the 1923 expulsion of African Americans and Hispanics?

Is Windber a suburb of Johnstown?[edit]

To Darthgriz98 Griz, This is my first attempt ever to use a talk page. I did see that earlier today you removed an entry of mine regarding Alan Freed and Johnnie Weismuller from the Johnstown page, as you believe Windber is not a suburb of Johnstown. I do understand your point that Windber lies across a county line from Johnstown. Please do know that the United States Census Bureau defines Johnstown's metropolitan area to include both Somerset and Cambria Counties. So by the stardard definition used by all geographers, Windber is a suburb of Johnstown, as are other Somerset County towns such as Davidsville, Jerome, Paint and Benscreek. I have worked very hard on the Johnstown Wikipedia entry in the last two weeks. I am documenting all my entries to ensure accuracy. There is a distinction between what lies in or happened within the current physical boundaries of the city of Johnstown, and the metro area, much of which uses "Johnstown" as their postal mailing address - but let's not get too picky. If there's something like UPJ, it's not the University of Pittsburgh at Richland Township - it's called Johnstown. I think it should be in the article, with a disclaimer that it lies in the suburb of Richland Twp. The Rolling Mills Mine disaster was in fact in the city limits - consult Topozone to see that the hillside is in the city, only the Inclined Plane is in Westmont. So let's not get too picky and exclude useful info - let's put it in and mention if things are in the suburbs.

As far as Windber - I would not consider it a suburb. The Johnstown area has grown over the past 100 years so that now there is one continuous stretch of development, but when Windber was established it was much further away from the Johnstown metro area, and has always had it's own identity.Blcartwright 23:00, 23 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

As I said, if it has the Johnstown mailing code or is in the imediate area, it is Johnstown, Windber has never been considered a part of Johnstown, I ment no harm when I took out the two gentlemen from Windber, I never ment that to be a personal attack against the editor placeing them in. I live here and grew up in the area, and have been to Windber many times before. I also know our mailing codes are very different and that Windber, Jerome, and so on arn't in Johnstown. THen we are in agreement. I think we could add a paragraph on the "Greater Johnstown Area" which list those things in places such as Westmont or Richland, but that most people think of as "Johnstown". I already added a map shwoing the wards and neighborhoods, as well as the location of the surrounding boroughs and townshios. I would like to add a table to the demographics which would tabulate the suburban population, and explain the interaction between the center city and the suburbs, along with the population shifts.

Pittsburgh Tri-State Area?[edit]

What I remember from growing up in Johnstown was that Pittsburgh might as well have been on the other side of the planet. Just driving to Greensburg was an exotic experience. Surely Johnstown isn't really considered part of the Tri-State metro area by anyone who's actually familiar with the Johnstown Mentality? OscarTheCat 00:01, 3 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Oddities in page display for this article[edit]

Somehow, one or both of the tables for radio and TV stations (code {{Johnstown Radio}} and {{Johnstown/Altoona TV}} have caused all subsequent text to appear in a small font. Furthermore, the whole city is inexplicably placed in the category Category:Television stations in Johnstown/Altoona, although the code does not seem to in the article itself. --orlady 15:54, 13 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Concerning Allan Freed and Windber[edit]

Windber, PA is a separate town than Johnstown [1], although it is a common misconception that it is a part of the city, it has a completely different area code and is in a different county with different city boundaries as shown in the link above. The above link shows that Windber is it's own city. Windber was created as a mining project, of the Ber-Wind mining Co., that became its own town, I can find a link on this if you would like. But the Allan Freed website has also made this mistake by saying he was born in Johnstown. Darthgriz98 15:19, 23 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

City Population figure might be wrong[edit]

Sorry, don't mean to be picky, but Johnstown's city population might be a little inaccurate. According to the US Census Bureau website, the 2000 population was 23,906. The 2006 population just for added info. is 22,269. Or does the city conduct its own census/estimates? Something on the Johnstown, PA Page Doesn’t Make Sense[edit]

What is “the ####### of Johnstown” supposed to mean and why are there number signs in it?

I suspect someone wanted to note that Clara Barton had become known in Johnstown by some honorary title, such as "the General of Johnstown". But there's no citation and David McCullough makes no mention of any honorary title (i.e., "The Angel of the Battlefield") in The Johnstown Flood (1968), wherein he devotes two full pages to Barton and the American Red Cross. Article neutrality and citation of claims about the region[edit]

Parts of this article do not seem to be written from a neutral perspective and sound almost like a promotion for the region. See the following statements from the article under section 1.3 - 2000s:

"Innovation is the key to the changes taking place for the area’s industry, and our region will continue to be on the leading edge."

and

"Significant and largely successful efforts have been made to deal with deteriorating housing, brownfields, drug problems, and other issues as population leaves the city limits and concentrates in suburban boroughs and townships. The Johnstown Fire Department has become a leader in developing intercommunication systems among first responders, and is now a national model for ways to avoid the communications problems which faced many first responders during the September 11, 2001 attacks."


The use of "our" implies that this article is written from the perspective of a resident, which may not be an objective one. Also, without citation, we cannot be sure that there have been significant and successful efforts to deal with social issues in the area. We also cannot be certain that the Fire Department has truly become a "leader" in its field or if this is the subjective view of a resident. Point of View[edit]

The 1900s section sounds like it was taken verbatim off a local Chamber of Commerce website. "A community with a lesser tradition might have reacted with despair." Pretty obvious that whoever originally wrote that was pandering to the Johnstown community.

Also, no sources in that section (or the 1800s or 2000s). The style sounds less encyclopedic, and more like it was written in a published work. I'm willing to bet these sections were copy-and-pasted from someone in the Johnstown community, whose views about the city may not be neutral. ColdIn02492 (talk) 08:34, 5 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Silver Drive-In[edit]

I just saw that Honeygo reverted the edit by Ron Ritzman putting back in a circular link stating that the link doesn't work properly. Unfortunately, the link works perfectly fine. There is no article on Silver Drive-In, that is why it redirects back to this article. We don't need to have links redirecting back to the article it is in. See WP:Redirect#Self-redirects. That is probably why the first user took it out. The clause there states that it could redirect to a section within a long article, but since this link redirects back to the exact same section it came from, I, too, don't think it's necessary. Article Evaluation[edit]

I recently evaluated this article for an assignment in my English class and I think it could be improved in the following ways:

Some of the information on the page seemed irrelevant such as saying Johnstown is 43 miles west south-west of Altoona because Altoona is that big of a town and if your not from the area this is useless information. Also the “In arts and literature” section seems to be irrelevant information as well for example the article stated the Bruce Springsteen mentions Johnstown in one of his songs seems irrelevant to the town itself.
