Criticism and controversy[edit]

I've changed "Not all of his songs were popular with listeners and audiences" to the more general "Not all of his songs were universally popular", and (more importantly) moved it into a separate paragraph. The previous version has "Not all of his songs were popular with listeners and audiences." as the lead sentence to a paragraph about a song that "his fans bought ... in millions", which just doesn't make sense. Details about Williamson's daughter Ami[edit]

I previously removed details about Williamson's daughter Ami, Pinchquasimodo put them back, and I've removed them again. I believe that these details are a violation of WP:BLP, in particular WP:BLP#Privacy_of_personal_information and (for Clemens Leske) Wikipedia:BLP#Privacy_of_names. Note that:

  • Neither Ami Williamson nor Clemens Leske are notable enough to have their own articles.
  • Ami Williamson's personal details in that paragraph are irrelevant to the article on John Williamson.

(I believe including the daughters' names doesn't violate BLP because they are mentioned earlier in the article as colloborating on Goodbye Blinky Bill.)

Can we have some other editors' opinions about this please. Mitch Ames (talk) 13:09, 8 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Details about Ami[edit]

I agree. This details are not relevant to the person concerned. Even if Allen's daughter is also musician the informations should be placed on her own article, if there's no page for her, these informations should not be placed. --MrSkaloon (talk) 03:17, 10 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Removed again[edit]

User:Pinchquasimodo has added details about Williamson's daugher Ami again, and I have removed them again, because I still believe that they violate wp:blp, as per my Talk page entry of 13:09, 8 December 2009 (UTC) above.

Pinchquasimodo, could you explain why you think the information is relevant to John Williamson's article. If Ami Williamson and/or Clemens Leske are notable (which they may well be), please create articles for one or both of them, and then include the information in them.

Do any other editors have opinions on this matter?

Recent work on Williamson's article[edit]

I recently worked on the article. Neither of his children are minors and simple information about their names and ages is allowable (mostly put in the Personal life section) as long as its not overly detailed or intrusive. I have included further details about Ami, her appearances on Williamson's tours and her own work in Iraq & Afghanistan which had her appear on Australian Story with commentary by Williamson. These details are relevant to Williamson's article as they impact directly on his notability as a performer and being in the media. Ami's husband is not relevant here unless he also contributed to Williamson's career.shaidar cuebiyar (talk) 02:25, 5 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Give Me A Home Among The Gumtrees[edit]

This passage "He was then honoured to perform both "Home Among The Gum Trees" and "True Blue" at Irwin's memorial service in the Australia Zoo Crocoseum. The service was later released on DVD" makes no mention of the authors of the Gumtrees song and re-enforces the general misconception that Williamson actually wrote it (an idea that is widespread on the web). I suggest that due acknowledgement of authorship be made here, and that a link be inserted to this page Give Me A Home Among The Gumtrees, which acknowledges Williamson's role in popularising the song. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Wyatte61 (talkcontribs) 17:45, 9 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Criticism and controversy[edit]

I've removed much of what was in this section. Just to remind everyone a few guidelines about Biographies of living persons;

  • Criticism and controversy must be cited.
  • Citing some of Williamson's work, and then either criticising it yourself, or saying it was criticised by others is not adequate. You need a reliable source that either contains the criticism, or discusses the criticism/controversy.
  • It is much preferable to discuss criticism and controversy within the rest of the article, where it can be suitably balanced and treated neutrally. Entire sections devoted to criticism and controversy alone is not encouraged.

Thanks. --Escape Orbit (Talk) 12:21, 18 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Exhibitionist painter ?[edit]

What exactly does this mean?

If Williamson paints exclusively in order to have his work displayed in art shows and competitions, then he is an ‘exhibiting’ artist.

(And he can be certain of selection ? Gosh. Lucky old John.) — Preceding unsigned comment added by 59.167.234.198 (talk) 07:38, 15 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Political views[edit]

In the personal life section, there is a reference to "political views", it is not an accurate description to say he is politically a "republican". A suggested version of this is: On the subject of Australia's system of government, John is an advocate for the change to the system of constitutional monarchy. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Merxa (talkcontribs) 04:02, 27 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Agree. When I read this entry I needed to go to the linked Wikipedia page and the referenced article to understand what was meant by being a "republican".
The text from linked article is easily taken out of context by saying "he's a rabid republican". This is untrue. If you examine his own words from his website https://johnwilliamson.com.au/a-true-blue-australian-flag/, this shows Williamson has a balanced view of Australia's history and future as relates to becoming a Republic. I think that it would be better to use Williamson's own words to present his views.

Views on Cats[edit]

I removed this entire line because I could find no references whatsoever that Williamson doesn't like cats. The song "Bill the Cat" is not about the damage that feral cats do to wildlife. The only reference is this part of a verse that says "he has no more time for female friends, only parrots and fairy wrens".

The song is actually about the family cat being desexed.
