Referencing improvements called for[edit]

This article currently is mainly reliant upon one stated source ("incorporates text from"), the official U.S. military bio for John K. Cannon. As with some other military bio articles, I see at least two problems: 1.) the official U.S. military bios are likely to be slanted, in that they do not convey information that would reflect poorly on the military (compare the official bio of Frank Kelso, involved in the Tailhook scandal, vs. a better written wikipedia article on him using several other sources), and 2.) the article does not show which material is copied. Copied material should be in quotes (quotation marks or set in block quote formatting), to separate from wikipedia editor wording of consensus views and to separate from new Original Research that may creep in as the article is edited over time. I do see that two other sources are used and the material they add is well-supported. The same care should be applied to material from the official bio. Hence I mark this article with the "refimprove" tag.

This is not an issue of copyright violation, I believe that the source is public domain. It is an issue of proper referencing, including avoiding the appearance of plagiarizing, but for other good referencing reasons as well. There are other perspectives than mine on some of these details. See Talk at WP:REF for other current discussion. doncram (talk) 18:03, 17 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
