Date of construction[edit]

There is a difference in sources regarding the date of construction. It would be more appropriate to include both sources, with a comment, rather than unilaterally deleting a sourced reference and replacing it with another source without comment.

Deleted text and source: The oldest part of the house dates from circa 1637 (according to a period map showing a building on the same location), and it is Swampscott's oldest building, said to be built for John Humphrey, the first Deputy Governor of the Massachusetts Bay Colony under John Winthrop.[1]
Replaced text: The house was later expanded over the next century. The house was surveyed by architectural historian Richard Candee in 1986; the estimated date of the house, based on style, is 1700.[2]

NotaBene 鹰百利 Talk

I would not lend much credence to construction dates given in a source from the 1920s. Architectural historians of the early 20th century often got things wrong, and that's assuming the cited source is actually quoting one, rather than repeating lore. (Just because a building appears on the site in a 17th century map doesn't mean the present building is that one, or even includes it in some way.) That said, even the First Period surveys used for this and other National Register nominations had their own issues. Magic♪piano 03:20, 22 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]
