Notes[edit]

Listed on Wikipedia:WikiProject Missing encyclopedic articles/Hotlist of History of Ideas. Most sources will be in Dutch so needs to be expanded by a Dutch/English speaker. Canuck100 (talk) 21:14, 6 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

References need updating[edit]

Hi,

The link for the only reference to this article, as it stands today, does not lead to the PDF document referred to, which was apparently in English and is apparently no longer available. It leads to a "No document found" on the corresponding website. I suspect that the document referred to, whether in English or Dutch, was only an exhibition catalogue and was therefore never printed in substantial quantities nor available electronically.

The following is probably the most indepth analysis of Johannes Bredenburg (in Dutch): L. (Wiep) van Bunge, Johannes Bredenburg (1643-1691). "Een Rotterdamse collegiant in de ban van Spinoza" (A Collegiant from Rotterdam under the Spell of Spinoza", PhD dissertation, Rotterdam 1990, Erasmus University, http://repub.eur.nl/pub/37828/

I would be happy if someone could confirm whether an English description of Bredenburg can be found, as I strongly suspect, here: Wiep van Bunge, Henri Krop, Bart Leeuwenburgh, Paul Schuurman, Han van Ruler, Michiel Wielema (editors), "Dictionary of Seventeenth and Eighteenth-Century Dutch Philosophers", 2003

This would probably be an excellent English-language source.

It would be good to have a reference to the statement in the article: "In the end, he was dissatisfied by his own rebuttal, refuted it, and came to adopt Spinoza's ideas." Is that really true?

I've just read a chapter in Jonathan Israel 's authoritative book [Radical Enlightenment] which is about Bredenburg. Chapter 19 Seems to agree with the version given here. Szczels (talk) 10:35, 18 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]
