CoI editing[edit]

Walsh has admitted to editing the article. He hasn't offered any evidence on what exactly was "erroneous" about the comments, or how he knows the editor was or is a member of "the gay lobby groups." BastunĖġáḍβáś₮ŭŃ! 11:34, 27 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

There's now a section on his admitted editing. Autarch (talk) 15:17, 27 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Reviewing quickly, the history shows that we misrepresented Walsh. We should not, therefore, get too excited over his editing this article. All the best: Rich Farmbrough, 15:19, 30 September 2015 (UTC).[reply]

Can you clarify your assertions? Are you referring to the section on Wikipedia editing or all of the article? Snappy (talk) 20:54, 30 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
We said
  • Walsh argued that proponents of same-sex marriage were "dangerous and vicious".
and
  • expressed annoyance that he couldn't call gay people "fairies"
It is clear that in the first case we omitted the word "some" and all context.
In the second case he is referring not to the inability to use the term, but the privileged position of others who can.
Both these readings are from the Independent article covering the editing itself.
The Irish Examiner references the second with an actual quote
If I were to call people fairies. I would be called a bigot and all sorts of things, but David Norris says it all the time and nothing is said.
And a supplementary comment:
“it wasn’t appropriate to be calling members of the gay community fairies”, because it leads to homophobia “and we have to rule that out”.
Similarly the first statement an actual quote can be found in the Examiner
dangerous, vicious elements within the gay ideological movement
The objection in Parliament was not to the characterisation as "dangerous and vicious" but that:
There is no such thing as the gay ideological movement.
Walsh continued:
Can I appeal to the more reasoned voices within the gay groups…to condemn this type of activity.
I have no idea what type of activity Walsh was referring to, but, while I would not expect us to say "Walsh claimed that some proponents of gay groups were reasonable" it is clear that he is not "arguing" anything, that he is not talking specifically about "proponents of same-sex marriage" and most importantly of all that the implied universal quantifier is absent, indeed inverted.
