Searching for Sources[edit]

After searching Google and the Indian newspapers (in English) listed here Newspapers in India - English, I found the following sources.

A book on the subject, but no online text or bibliography. Paracger Dushyant, D. Hara Prasad, The Bird Mystery of Jatinga, Konark Publichers PVT. LTD., Delhi, 1994.

And a quote about the cause of this mystery from an Indian paper.

Jatinga in North Cachar Hills district was (in)famous for birds diving into fire to embrace death. The gory spectacle drew a lot of tourists too. The myth has since been broken. New studies have proved that torches lit up by the local people used to attract these birds and they were killed the moment they touched down.

Renaming Suggestions[edit]

I also believe this article should be renamed to the Jatinga Bird Mystery, as Jatinga is a specific location and this article is focused more on the mystery. --Maetrics 15:30, 6 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Mystery explained[edit]

This is hogwash. Birds aren't moths, they have color vision which can discern the color of fire and the color of moon light (which birds sometimes use to navigate), they would not fly into fire (or else this hunting method would be used all over the planet since humanity invented fire). Blatant plagiarism?[edit]

Most of this article seems to be identical to http://www.assam-tourism.com/jatinga.htm
