Faith[edit]

His mom is catholic, his dad was Jewish. He isn't religious

Judaism is both an ethnicity and a faith. You can be totally irreligious and still technically Jewish (Woody Allen, for example, is an atheist). Also, while Judaism traditionally goes by the mother, there are denominations that accept those with only a Jewish father (what's informally known as "half-Jewish"). That doesn't apply here. In an academic context, "Jewish" can refer to ethnicity and/or culture rather than religion, such as with Jewish atheism or secular Judaism. Furthermore, if you look at Category:Jewish rock musicians, you will see it contains people like Lou Reed, Adam Lambert, and Pink, who are ethnically Jewish and may have been raised in that culture but otherwise do not practice religion of any kind. Therefore, in this context, it would be no less inaccurate to call him "Jewish" than to refer to him as Polish or Italian.--Invisiboy42293 (talk) 00:21, 14 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Firstly, it is inappropriate for you to re-add the category without a consensus to do so at this time. Secondly, WP:OTHERSTUFF with regards to the other people you cited. Unless you can provide a statement from Schwartzman stating that he considers himself Jewish I don't believe it's appropriate to apply the category. Once again, "Jewish" in this context has nothing to do with his religious views, only his ethnicity, and thus WP:BLPCAT is not being affected. We're not talking his beliefs or philosophy; its a simple statement of geneology that is stated in the article. Is there a Wiki policy that regulates categorizing people by ethnicity? If so, this is my first time running into it, and I've been doing this for a few years.

Thank you for the apology; it is appreciated! I understand your position, but I've been in multiple debates regarding ethnicity and religion here (Talk:Bernie Sanders probably being the most recent) and I think it is best to err on the side of caution with these things. Whether talking about religion or ethnicity, with regards to a WP:BLP in particular I think we really need a source indicating that the subject has self-identified as such.
Might be worth reaching out to relevant projects (or possibly WP:3O, though I don't think we're quite there yet) to see if we can get input from additional editors. DonIago (talk) 06:48, 14 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Acting vs music career[edit]

The first paragraph in the Career section says, "Despite leaving the band for an acting career...." However, I'm not sure that this is an accurate statement. His first major role as Max Fischer in Rushmore happened four years before his band Phantom Planet's CD The Guest was released, and their subsequent tour. It says 'the band he is in' as Phantom Planet, though as their wiki page shows he is an ex member. This article also states his current band/solo project as Coconut Records. Trivia[edit]

Coconut Records merger[edit]

Under Wikipedia's rules, a person does not get multiple distinct articles just because they're known by different names in different fields of endeavour — a person who's notable both as a writer and as a musician does not get two separate articles just because he uses different names for each activity. Coconut Records (musician) does not describe its subject as a band in which Schwartzman is a member, but as a solo project where he's assisted by a rotating lineup of guest contributors — so it doesn't warrant a separate article from his main one, but should be covered in the same place as his writing/directing work. For a similar example, we do not maintain a separate article about each individual project name that Will Oldham has used on different albums — we maintain one article about Oldham himself, and each of his stage names (Bonnie Prince Billy, Palace Music, etc.) is just a redirect to that one article. A more apt example would be the fact that Donald Glover does not have a separate page for Childish Gambino, despite releasing two well-received albums and a well-received EP. Further, Ace Enders does not have a separate article for Ace Enders and a Million Different People either, despite that "group" having released two albums. One of his side-projects is currently just him (I Can Make a Mess Like Nobody's Business), but this group previously had several other members before they departed.
