Presidential Award[edit]

The article states that, in 1917, Gibbons received an award from "President" Theodore Roosevelt. TR was not President in 1917, so this needs straightening out.John Paul Parks (talk) 17:21, 19 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Name?[edit]

Actually, it should be James Cardinal Gibbons. When he was elevated to cardinal-priest, he took Cardinal as his middle name. His signature reads "J. Card Gibbons", for example.

No, "Cardinal" is not a middle name. "Cardinal" came to be inserted between 1st and last names because previous use, before last names came into use, was to refer to ___, the Cardinal from ___. I think the New York Times had that remark back in 1958. Shouldn't there be some critical questions about his influence on the public opinion about Leopold II's Congo? The article from Robert G. conclaves[edit]

There should be notes about the conclaves he was eligible for (1903, 1914). Harbour Lights[edit]

As the ocean liner carrying U.S. Catholic attendees home from the Vatican Council neared the continent, Gibbons met with fellow travelers to plan how best to deal with the Press they knew would await them at the dock. In the U.S. there had been considerable hostile reaction to news of the new doctrine of Papal Infallibility. At the dockside, Gibbons read a prepared statement and took questions. Each clarification seemed to breed more aggressive questions. Finally, James Gibbons told the clamoring audience this story. "During my stay in the Vatican I had two occasions to meet with Pope Pius.
