Date[edit]

The expedition to Mt. Whitney under Langley was in 1881, not 1880. (from anon)

30 or 31 inches ?[edit]

In the page Allegheny Observatory, he is said, that the telescope Keeler Memorial Reflector is a telescope of 30 inch.

discovered the first pulsar ?[edit]

No. Photographed the Crab Nebula, in which the pulsar lives. Pulsars were discovered by radio astronomy, at Cambridge, in 1968, by Tony Hewish and Jocelyn Bell. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 86.142.17.125 (talk) 19:07, 2 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

The dangers of mistakes here.[edit]

I too was doing the Independent crossword on 2nd June, and I too was puzzled by the assertion in one of the clues that someone discovered a pulsar in 1899. "Using what equipment?" was my immediate reaction.

A bit of digging led me to this page, where the statement is made. And to an uncountable number of other pages and sites where the information from here has been duplicated/copied/quoted. The mistake has spread worldwide, and is now appearing in crossword clues. Quiz Nights next?

There seems little point in crediting him so prominently with photographing the Crab Nebula.

Was the mistake made by the original author? Or by (Ref 2)? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Bas2012 (talkcontribs) 18:40, 5 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
