This is a complex issue, but it is probably not exactly correct to say that throughout the period of the Morant Bay rising and its aftermath, that 'Jamaica was then a Crown Colony'. It BECAME one in 1866. The murder of the British subject the Jamaica Committee focussed on was carried out on the orders of the Provost Marshal in Morant Bay. Ramsay, during the period of martial law proclaimed by Governor Eyre in 1865. The governing body of Jamaica, an elected assembly under the Governor and his Council, renounced its powers during the crisis, but the Crown Colony itself seems formally to have been set up under the first Governor to succeed Eyre, John Peter Grant, on his arrival in 1866Delahays (talk) 17:40, 8 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]
