Origin of name?[edit]

Is it an Aboriginal name? Named after the bird? See Jabiru (disambiguation) - the word is used in different places around the world. Is this just coincidence? --Chriswaterguy talk 02:55, 3 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

See also List_of_English_words_of_Australian_Aboriginal_origin which implies it's Spanish. Claire (talk) 21:34, 6 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Per the Northern Territory Government [1], the town is named after the bird. I was also able to track down local aboriginal names for the bird, confirming the word is not of indigenous origin.[2] The stork we call a Jabiru in Australia is also found through Asia though and with the Portuguese in Timor, perhaps that could explain it. Just in case anyone was still curious after 15 years or so! Dfadden (talk) 03:10, 20 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
