"Mourners, who believed him to be dead, often kept him awake at night crying outside his window", says the article.

What, really? Often? Was it typical at that time for mourners to show up days, weeks, or years later after someone's death and cry at their former window?

Seems more likely that either this wasn't actually "often", or that the "mourners" were actually fully aware of the joke.
