I'm unsure of how to cite sources for this page.[edit]

I added the account of the Grosse Isle disaster, quoted from an unnamed primary source in Howard Zinn's "A People's History of the United States" on page 226-227.

Assessment[edit]

Nix to flag of Eire[edit]

Yes, and note that all the pictures are of Roman Catholic Irish Canadians (fits the stereotype), whereas a very large number of Irish Canadians are Protestant. Ausseagull (talk) 07:17, 24 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I agree with the assessment that there needs to be greater diversity in this group, particularly, I've noticed a significant gender imbalance in many [fill in the blank]-Canadian articles (I assume this is likely across many other groups). I eat BC Fish (talk) 01:00, 15 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

apparently Canada ends at the Rockies....[edit]

Seems to be a common problem across Canadian articles; the writeups end at the BC-Alberta border, or when BC's mentioned at all it's from a Central Canadian perspective/orientation and in no other fashion. Here's been omitted altogether.....because I'm in no mood to go gathering citations I'm not going to add a BC section directly but will begin drafting one herel, based on what I know (I don't have a lot of BC sources on hand as I live in NS now);

Irish in British Columbia (draft)[edit]

The earliest Irish settlers west of the Rockies were possibly (?) members of the part of Selkirk colonists who came to the lower Columbia in the 1830s (date?), though nearly all of those remained in what would later become the United States. Very few if any of the Hudson's Bay Company employees and other settlers in the Colony of Vancouver Island were Irish, but with the founding of the Mainland Colony in 1858, those of Irish origin began to come in large numbers. They were of two kinds - those directly from the British Isles, usually in an official capacity and generally Protestant (e.g. Chartres Brew first Chief Constable and Chief Gold Commissioner, who had been with the Royal Irish Constabulary), and Americans of Irish origin, generally Catholic (e.g. Ned McGowan of the gold claim known as the Boatmen of San Francisco). Other notable Irish names in the early history of British Columbia - than those in mining [other names forthcoming e.g. Caspar Phair cf. Miyazaki House) - included those in ranching - e.g. the O'Keefe Ranch near Vernon - and, as time went on, missionaries and priests & nuns in teh residential school system and other educators (Rev. Turner, a "saddlebag parson", I think was Irish, I'll check - and various later-era Oblate missionaries and the staff at St. Anne's Academy in Victoria). [other names to check - Justice HPP Crease....). Many notable entrepreneurs and politicians were Irish - Arthur Bunster, a Vancouver Island brewer and one of BC's first MPs, and three of the first five BC Premiers were Irish Protestants - John Foster McCreight, "Boomer" Walkem, and A.C. Elliott [maybe de Cosmos too, he was UEL Nova Scotian, uncertain if he was Irish or Scots UEL though...]; Later-era names include Margaret Lally "Ma" Murray, born in Kansas but of passionately Irish origin. Today, there is an Irish Canadian newspaper in Vancouver, the Celtic Connection[ref: http://www.celtic-connection.com/about.html] and an Irish Centre, located on Prior Street in Strathcona. The successful chain of Irish-style music pubs founded by the Irish Rovers had its start in Vancouver, which has other Irish-flavoured bars, notably the Blarney Stone and (formerly) the Pig'n'Whistle).

"Irish-centric ghettos in Toronto" like Cabbagetown[edit]

Isn't Cabbagetown traditionally described as North America's biggest Anglo-Saxon slum, as it is in Hugh Garner's Cabbagetown?
Should this perhaps be reading Corktown, a different neighbourhood on the east side, rather than Cabbagetown?
