The boxing story[edit]

Was it not Bruce Lee who out-boxed a British chap in an amateur schools boxing match? I have not come across a story about Yip Man entering a boxing ring. 86.178.163.150 (talk) 18:15, 16 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

The boxing story is fictional. I know of some people who actually believe that the Ip Man vs. Twister match did happen in history. 暗無天日 contact me (聯絡) 07:22, 17 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
The previous poster is right, "Taylor Milos" never even existed, checked it out on www.boxrec.com just now. I think the character "Taylor Milos" was in fact an amalgam of the heavyweight British Boxers Yip Man actually fought, they basically took the boxers he did fight, and condensed them into a single fictional character to save time. Yip Man did not beat one Boxer he beat several, actually, but none of them were world class. I was kinda surprised by that part of the movie I was like "what?...." I was wondering why they didn't show the other Boxers; to save time, they just combined all the fighters into one and that was that. If they had gone through each of Yip Man's challenge matches, the movie would have been a good 3 to 4 hours or longer, I guess it was just faster to make up a dude. Oh yeah, this article could benefit from a "historical accuracy" section, although the whole "loosely based" thing is a sort of disclaimer. 71.221.183.202 (talk)stardingo747 —Preceding undated comment added 03:14, 8 November 2010 (UTC).[reply]

Description of plot[edit]

I noticed that some editors have been using very interpretive and subjective psychoanalysis of the fictional characters in the show. Can we please stick to a bare neutral synopsis instead of interjecting personal interpretations of the film? Zhanzhao (talk) 14:24, 15 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

"Biography!?"[edit]

Ok, I'm not sure if this is really the right place to vent but (no, it's not)... I'm so darn angry. I can't say I'm an expert on the life of Ip Man, but I've been an admirer since studying Wing Chun, and know a moderate amount about his life. And this "biography" is pure fiction from one end to the other. Just a few examples of how far out of whack it is:

  • The "Twister Milos" fight, which is the centrepiece of the film, it did happen but not the way the movie was
  • In the film, Sifu is portrayed (by a 44 year old actor) as a handsome young man with one infant child and a pregnant wife. In fact at the time he was nearly 60 years old; nearly bald, with a lined, ageing face; and had 6 children, the oldest of whom were adults with their own students.
  • Sifu is depicted as an impoverised, unemployed outsider. In fact he came from a very wealthy family, had worked as a senior police officer and a businessmanm and had political contacts in Hong Kong. Although his family estates and businesses were expropriated (i.e. stolen) by the communists, he certainly wasn't poor.
  • They're a bit vague about what exactly Sifu is escaping from in Foshan, and why he expects refuge in Hong Kong; they allow the audience to elide that it is something to do with the Japanese occupation as depicted at the end of the first film. However this film is set 4 years after the defeat of Japan. Like millions of other Chinese, he was actually seeking British protection from the Chinese Communist Party. (Hmm, no suprises why they censored that bit!)
  • His first students are depicted as walk-ins who become his disciples after trying to beat him and up. In fact his first classes in Hong Kong were pre-arranged classes for members of the restaurant waiters' union.
  • Leung Sheung is shown as a brash, hot-headed young punk. In fact when he became one of Sifu's disciples he was already 31 years old, and already ranked as a master in White Eyebrow style. Also, every account of his life comments on his quiet modesty.
  • They are shown being forced to move the school only very shortly after opening it. While it is true that it moved several times during the 1950s, the first move wasn't until after they had been open for 4 years and gathered quite a number of students. It wasn't causeed by a riot, but simply because they could no longer fit in the old premises;

There seems to be so little regard for even basic facts of Sifu's life, that it seems this film has been created purely as a vehicle for ultra-nationalism. -- 202.63.39.58 (talk) 15:57, 10 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

The article, and if I recall the film did as well, does state that it was only loosely based on real events. Its not a true biography, any more than believing Bruce Lee would introduce himself as Lee Xiao Long at that age. If you wish, you could do a film/real-life comparison like what was done on the Ted Bundy article, but you'll need proper references and citations for it. I'll be glad to take this one, Kelvin; sorry you've had to wait a bit for a review. Comments to follow in the next 1-5 days. Best, Khazar2 (talk) 15:06, 24 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Okay, I've seen this film, but it's been a while, so I apologize if any of the comments below are dense. This article seems to be off to a good start. It seems reasonably comprehensive and the sourcing is thorough, though I still haven't checked the sources for reliability (I'm not familiar offhand with the Hong Kong publications). This does still seem to need some cleanup in terms of balance and level of detail at points; I've made specific suggestions below. I've also made some changes as I went, including a few cuts; feel free to revert any with which you disagree and we can discuss further. It doesn't look like you've made any edits to the article yourself yet, but thanks for being willing to take this one on. -- Khazar2 (talk) 18:40, 24 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

  • "Jip6 Man6 Ji6: Zung1 Si1 Zyun6 Kei4" -- I don't speak Cantonese, but this combination of letters and numbers strikes me as unusual. Can you verify that this is the correct way to write this? (this is right  Done)

  • MOS:FILM suggests that plot summaries be limited to 400-700 words; this is about 1000. I'd suggest cutting it by at least a third to meet GA requirements for conciseness (see criterion 2b). You may find Wikipedia:How to write a plot summary helpful for this.

  • "This character is based on Wong Shun Leung." -- I'd suggest adding a phrase of context about who this is. Done

  • Providing simplified, traditional, and pinyin script translations for every character name seems like excessive detail to me, and not useful to most English-language readers. What would you think about moving these to Explanatory footnotes? That way, that level of detail is still available for readers who want a translation, but doesn't clutter this section. Done

  • "* Jean Favie as the judge who changes the rules of the match because Twister's manager told him to do it." -- we're getting into fairly trivial characters now; since this person doesn't even have a Wikipedia article, I'm not sure they're worth listing here. Done

  • It seems odd to say that "Jin attempts to retire from the martial arts world by ... befriending Ip". Wouldn't Ip be the worst possible friend to make if attempting to retire? I'm not sure I quite understand this sentence. Done

  • If Li Chak is important enough to include in the prose of the "casting" section, why is he not in the earlier cast list? (Same comment for Ashton Chen) Done

  • "solid martial arts foundation or looks" -- looks as in "good-looking", "looks like a martial artist", or "looks like Bruce Lee"?

  • "Yip narrowed the casting call down to two possible candidates: 10-year-old Jiang Dai Yan from Henan and 12-year-old Pan Run Kang from Heilongjiang" -- it seems trivial to say who the runner-up was to deliver a few lines of dialogue. I realize a cameo as Bruce Lee is a big deal, but it's still just a cameo.

  • "Other cast members include Ngo Ka-nin and Kelvin Cheng" -- are these people significant enough to mention in the prose? Who did they play, and what's important about them?

  • "is being viewed ... is being seen" -- is it the rivals who see the other discipline this way? Or everyone?

  • "Ip Man 3 (also known as Ip Man 3D) is a direct sequel to Ip Man 2 and is due to be released in 2013.[58]" -- IMDB is not a reliable source, and we're almost done with 2013. Can you update this section? Or is this just a hoax addition to the article?

I'll put this on hold to give you a chance to address the above, and then continue with the review. Let me know your thoughts, and thanks again, Khazar2 (talk) 18:40, 24 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

On further review, I'm concerned about the quality of sourcing beyond the IMDB issue I raised above; we all make mistakes, but having an entire section of an article be wrong is a pretty big blunder. But here are some other sources I'm not sure pass muster:

  • Same for [wu-jing.org wu-jing.org], which identifies as a fan site.

  • is badassdigest.com a reliable source?

  • is insing.com a reliable source?

Since this is a driveby nomination anyway, I'm going to close this review without listing this one for now. There's a lot of good information here, and I appreciate the work others have put into it to bring it this far. Before being ready for GA, though, I think it'll need some attention to clean up errors and improve the quality of sourcing. I hope someone will be interested in taking this fun film the rest of the way. Cheers and all best, Khazar2 (talk) 18:59, 24 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

As an update, I did find some references to an Ip Man 3D in the works [1], so this information wasn't fictional, just badly out of date; it looks like the project never got funded and Yen and Yip pulled out. -- Khazar2 (talk) 19:05, 24 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]
