Headings[edit]

  • I've tried to make each episode into a "heading" in order to have a Table of Contents but Episode 3 will not convert. Every other episode will. Does anyone know why? I used the === === on either side but it won't change. maltmomma 15:57, July 17, 2005 (UTC)

Timeline and Family Tree sections[edit]

Okay, I reworked the family tree for the Wheeler family. The bulleted list was confusing, but also contained redundancy. The bulleted info was already in the article. I had some blanks I had to fill in because the movie leaves out a few people, but mentions their children, so I used the book to fill in the gaps. I hope that's okay. I'm worn out and will post the sourcing stuff later. This took me hours as I'm not a coding kind of girl. :) MagnoliaSouth (talk) 03:34, 6 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Inaccuracies?[edit]

  • Episode 1 greatly misrepresented Jedediah Smith's expedition to California. For a production that makes so much about being true to history where the fictional characters contact it, this was disappointing. Smith's problems with the Mojave came not on the return portion of his first trip, but on the outward leg of his second. There is nothing in Smith's history about escaping through a cave, and the ordeal he had in the Great Basin on the way back from his first trip to California would have been more dramatic than the fiction of the cave, and wouldn't have taken any longer to present.RDavS (talk) 22:43, 16 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  • Episode 3 showed Quantrill's raiders operating prior to the outreak of civil war. Is this right?
  • Episode 2 showed the death of a character whose leg was broken after the "doctor" took an hour and a half to amputate the lower leg. Most surgeons of the time were very quick at this (survival not being guaranteed) and even allowing for incompetance the action of a saw would surely permit mush quicker action than this. If it did take this long surely the patient would have died of blood loss long before 90 minutes was up? Dainamo 23:21, 19 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]
While a real doctor would likely have not taken so long, I think the film presents well what can happen with self-proclaimed doctors. While one might expect every pioneer to carry a saw, at such an advanced point along the trail, many valuable items had already been discarded to reduce weight. Without a saw, 90 minutes is not unreasonable; and the tourniquet could limit the blood flow.RDavS (talk) 22:50, 16 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

DVD is missing scenes[edit]

In trying to find a citation source for the missing scenes in the DVD, I found this page on Amazon.com: [1]. One poster included a short list of missing scenes:

"A few of the cut scenes appear to be: 1.) Kerri Russel's character towards the end of episode two is dragged away from her indian family; 2.)Sitting Bull's sundance prior to the Little Bighorn; 3.)Episode 6 - hodgekiss guns during battle of Wounded Knee."

Should this part be taken out? I couldn't find a 6 disc version anywhere at all, and found several references to the version on tvaddicts.tv being a bootleg that only has 6 discs, because each episode is on a single disc. That being said, on to the actual versions everyone is curious about. As stated, there are two different versions, a four disk (three disks of episodes) version, and a six disk Emmy consideration version. Due to the latter existing, the B.S. hoax bootlegger site tvaddicts.tv has made a "garbage" version of six disks, which is often mistaken for being the rare six disk version. It is not but a bootleg of the recorded episodes. It has no features or subtitles, sub-par audio, incorrect viewing ratio, comes in regular separate plastic cases, and is on DVD-R's. The real six disk version however, was created solely for Emmy award consideration. It was never packaged to be sold in retail, nor can it be found as such.

Unfortunately though, this six disk Emmy version decimates and destroys the four disk version, most of us have, in every aspect. It comes in a large book-like leather folder and is gorgeously designed. It is, of course, uncut and shows identical to the original aired version. Each episode is on its own separate disk but there is no bonus disk. In addition, this set comes with a massive 90 page hardcover book detailing the making of the series, examining each episode individually, and includes stunning stills and pictures. Truly it is a sad thing, as I would have gladly paid twenty dollars more for such an extravagant and untouched version.

OK, I noticed someone else put the quote about "Some violent scenes were edited out from the DVD to make it more "classroom friendly"" back in. I don't think this is actually true. (The suggestion that there were cut scenes, made me go to ebay and hunt for anyone selling the emmy version. I found it, and here it is: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&item=250415288533 (I hope that's visible to others) I watched it, as someone who really enjoyed the series, and didn't find anything in there that was deleted. I did find the scene that they mentioned (Of Keri Russell as Naomi Wheeler being dragged away by Union soldiers), but that was in the ads for the show on the original 4 disc one sold to the public. I think what happened is that that scene was just cut, and never made it to either version. Perhaps there were other similar scenes. But, I think that part should be removed. I know I went to ebay primarily on the basis of this rumor. (I'm the same person who posted the above comment.)

Although the Emmy version's packaging is nice, and I don't regret having bought it at all, there are things that I think make it so that most people would prefer the four disc version: The emmy version has no menus at all, simply has the disclaimer about not showing it to anyone, etc. The four disc version has all the special features, like interviews with the actors, with a Lakota language expert, etc.
