Unsourced vague final sentence[edit]

"Critics of this Act would probably contend that while the US Constitution does prohibit Federal and State governments from infringing on the religious liberties of people living within the US, it does not obligate or permit the US to use embargo or military intervention as means to uphold these rights abroad." Who cares what hypothetical people "would probably" contend? (I'm such a critic - this is for the UN, not the US - but I'm not encyclopaedic.) --Hugh7 (talk) 00:02, 26 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]


Questionable non-sourced sentence in lead paragraph[edit]

The following sentence was added by User:Sir Nicholas de Mimsy-Porpington in 2006 and apparently has remained since:

"The United States through its constitution and various international agreements has an obligation to support religious freedom around the world by skirmishing religious intolerance in countries that put sanctions on the religious rights of the people."

I would like to see a reliable source in support of this statement, particularly for the opinion that the U.S. Constitution creates an obligation on the part of the government, or even the authority, to support religious freedom around the world. I think the No Religious Test Clause and the First Amendment are the only places where religion are mentioned and neither creates an obligation to extend the rights of Americans to other parts of the world — which is not to imply that it has not inspired other peoples since its establishment to demand similar rights in their own countries.

Also, to use the phrase "skirmishing religious intolerance" — which strikes me as an odd metaphor as compared to the unremarkable metaphor of "battling religious intolerance" — seems to suggest that this metaphor is used by some reliable authority or original source and I would expect to see a cite for such an unusual turn of phrase (n.b. 2016 expansion?[edit]

Saw in the news recently that new amendments were added in 2016, which do not seem to be noted in the article. Anyone have a better understanding?
