Tried to clean up and modernize prose[edit]

This article has problems, but I'm not experienced enough to know exactly what all of them are. There is a template (which itself seems to contain syntactic errors) that seems to suggest the article is copied from an old encyclopedia that is now in the public domain. Perhaps part of the problem is that the article contains too much original research (speaking in the voice of that old volume, rather than just citing it). In any event, I would feel more comfortable if a more experienced editor reviews my edits to make sure I haven't introduced further problems. Perhaps the article should simply be combined as a shorter section of a more general article on Roman citizenship? Teacher1850 (talk) 17:26, 7 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
