Salford or Trafford[edit]

Although the Imperial War Museum North is in many ways part of the Salford Quays redevelopment, I suspect that User:80.47.26.69 is right that the building is actually in Trafford and the boundary runs up the canal between the IWMN and The Lowry. -- Solipsist 20:18, 8 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

The confusion, I think, comes from the recent branding of The Quays, covering Salford Quays, Trafford Wharf (which is where the IWMN is) and Old Trafford. There's absolutely no doubt that the IWMN is in Trafford. --Malleus Fatuarum 00:14, 3 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I'm not a regular Wikipedia user nor do I ever edit articles but I can comment on the IWM (north) - not that I think this comment will last long before someone deletes it. The IWM(N) is bad. Very bad. The building is a classic example of the 'look how clever I am' school of architecture where the practical functionality of the building is suborned to the architects 'vision'. For example, the main staircase has a hand rail that divides the staircase roughly 70/30 at the bottom. As you climb, the stairs narrow and anyone who is to the left of the rail suddenly realises that the rail meets the wall about half way up and he has to go back down and walk up the other side! ( Picture here; http://flickr.com/photos/89921956@N00/2299831459/ )It's impossible to see this from the bottom because the stairs curve left and the rail meets the wall out of sight of the bottom of the stairs. As a museum it fails because it is filled with a great deal of nothing. There's no theme or reason to what is exhibited or, if there is, the building is laid out so badly that it isn't apparent. The first thing you see at the head of the stairs is a Harrier - painted in USMC colours - hanging from the ceiling. As you wander around looking for something of interest you find an old fire engine, a T-34 tank and, god alone knows why, a Trabant car. A few cases display a random selection of weapons and odd personal effects. Admision is free and yet visiting the museum is really bad value for money since it costs a small fortune to park your car. I can heartily recommend visiting any other branch of the IWM - Duxford, for example, is astoundingly good. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 86.169.0.228 (talk) 21:21, 27 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Postal address or actual location?[edit]

In the infobox, the postal address is being used as the Museum's location:

The Quays

Trafford Wharf Road

The problem is that the Museum is not actually in or part of Manchester, so having that city as the Museum's location is misleading. Trafford Park is an area of the town of Stretford, so surely the Museum's location comes under that town, although the Royal Mail ignores that and uses the Manchester post-town. I think the location in the infobox should state:

The Quays

Trafford Wharf Road

Trafford Park

Stretford

near Manchester

This would clearly state where the Museum is, and not some undefined postal area. Or carry on with what the Royal Mail decides and stop using actual places anymore? HLE (talk) 20:21, 3 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I'm not sure what you mean by "undefined postal area". Postal areas are very clerly defined, and Trafford Park is in the Manchester postal area, as is the rest of Stretford. --Malleus Fatuorum 21:08, 3 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

True, Trafford Park comes under the Manchester postal area, as do Eccles, Atherton, Little Hulton, and Whitefield. But none of them are part of the city of Manchester. So I feel it is misleading to state in the infobox that the Museum's location is in "Manchester" when it is not actually part of that city. The infobox states the location, not the postal address. Since the Museum is in the Trafford Park area of Stretford, then the infobox should say so. To make things clearer "near Manchester" should perhaps added as well. The address given in the infobox is the same as that given by IWM North on its website at IWM North: Visitor Information. The article also gives the museum's coordinates. I don't think there's any ambiguity as to where the museum is. --IxK85 (talk) 22:35, 3 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I've realised the point I'm trying to get across was about actual localities, and not postal addresses. But it is too difficult to explain and have decided to not carry it any further. I may bring that up on the Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Greater Manchester‎ page. There's no need to change the "Template:Infobox Museum" from location to address. Instead I've correctly piped the IWM North's address from [[Manchester]] to [[M postcode area|Manchester]]. it had given the impression the museum and Trafford Park were part of the city of Manchester, when if fact they come under the much larger Manchester postcode area.
