Discovered

"He is discovered by Peter Clemenza when the former wanders into the Genco Olive Oil Company and offers to repair the delivery truck. He is immediately taken into the organization."

I've seen GF2 a number of times and don't remember this. Where is this from? Actually, as this article progresses, I see more about "Johnny Lips" and "Hyman Rothstein". Again, don't remember this from the movie. (I read the book as well and am mostly sure none of this was in the book either)

Also, how is Roth's exact birth date known?

In The Godfather Trilogy: 1901-1980, a previously deleted scene shows Clemenza introducing Hyman Suchowsky, a.k.a "Johnny Lips" (played by John Megna) to Vito Corleone. Vito immediately suggests he needs a better name and asks the young Suchowsky what man he admires most in the world. Suchowski answers "Arnold Rothstein." From then on, he is dubbed "Hyman Roth". Roth's age (67 iirc) can be glimpsed on the birthday cake in the movie, underneath the map of Cuba. He actually asks whether they got his age right, so it's there for the eagle-eyed viewer to spot. It's the scene in the article photo, where he pretends he is about to retire and hand over all his business interests, and is presumably some time late in 1958.Paulturtle (talk) 00:04, 7 April 2017 (UTC)

Wife?

citation request

Hi, I'm not sure that the citation request for the following is strictly necessary:

"Roth manipulates Michael's brother Fredo into giving him information he uses to make an attempt on Michael's life ‹The template Citation needed span is being considered for possible deletion.› in order to avenge Moe Greene"

Nothing in the film suggests that Fredo knew the information would be used to assassinate Michael (there are lots of scenes suggesting the contrary, like the time he was woken up by a phonecall and accuses the conspirators of lying to him). But even if he did know, there's no possible universe in which assassinating his brother was a good move for Fredo, and he doesn't appear to hate Michael enough to want to murder him- so neither by wisdom nor irrational hate was this move concocted, the only other option is that he was tricked (and manipulated is more ambiguous than tricked).

It does seem that this was done in order to avenge Moe Greene when Roth tells Michael so in one scene. But it is unlikely that this was the only motivation. Eliminating a rival can be good for other (less moralistic) reasons too, and Roth's sermon is an effort to keep Michael in Cuba until his assassination- he's saying that 'you had it coming, so don't take it out on this deal'.

The context of Roth mentioning Moe Greene, is that Michael had complained about the hit on Frankie Pentangeli, and Roth points out that he, too, had lost a partner (and I'm not suggesting that the hit on Pentangeli was meant to avenge Greene's death, either). Really he's making a point against vengeance. I can't say I've ever heard of any interpretation that Roth was trying to avenge Greene by killing Michael; to me it seems very novel. But we could go back and forth on interpretation: I might just as well say that Roth wanted to marry Kay, but needed Michael out of the way (and would get to keep Fredo's suitcase full of cash, as well). The entire article lacks sources, but that particular statement (not the whole sentence - just the part about revenge) stands out (WP:CHALLENGE).-- Gyrofrog (talk) 20:13, 8 March 2013 (UTC)
