Improving this article[edit]

Hello, to anyone interested, I'm going to start trying to improve this article. Some orders of business include: removing the "Example Work" section, adding a photograph of Hu, etc. Regarding a photo, I've found what I think is a very good portrait of him, however I am as of yet unable to find its copyright status. It is at: [1] and is owned by The Division of Rare and Manuscript Collections, Cornell University Library [2]. TheSlowLife (talk) 00:57, 15 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hu Shi vs. Hu Shih[edit]

Something to think about: Hu Shi is the proper Hanyu Pinyin but when Hu was in the USA he went by Hu Shih. So he seems to have chosen Hu Shih to represent his name in the English language. TheSlowLife (talk) 01:07, 15 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

  • Agreed. Though Hu Shi is his name spelled in Hanyu Pinyin, we should go with the established spelling that he went by. Just as we write Chiang Kai-shek but not Jiang Jieshi; Chow Yun Fat and not Zhou Runfa; Lee Teng-hui and not Li Denghui. 61.224.43.221 (talk) 09:58, 8 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]
    • Alright, I've moved it over. Thanks for the input! I wouldn't have done it otherwise. TheSlowLife (talk) 16:21, 12 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Sample work[edit]

Here's the "Sample work" I removed from the main article. I don't think it's important, but a reference to a website that contains this could be useful. Since this is also in the history, if someone would rather have this deleted from the talk page, feel free.

I agree this excerpt was too long. It would fit better in wikiquote. In the article, I added a smaller except (2 stanzas) to illustrate his vernacular poetry and writing rules. GiuseppeMassimo (talk) 16:58, 11 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hu Shih vs. Hu Shi again[edit]

The article is titled Hu Shih, but a contributor went through and changed all spellings to Hu Shi, making the text of the article inconsistent with its title. A complete change of spelling must go with a change in title. Please discuss this change on the talk page before you do it. Also note that most of the English language references use the spelling Hu Shih. These cannot be changed! The spelling Hu Shih is a publication fact, and cannot be subjected to post facto removal. Pragmatism[edit]

Hu Shih himself translated [pragmatism] into Chinese as simplified Chinese: 实验主义; traditional Chinese: 實驗主義; pinyin: shíyànzhǔyì ...
The second translation as simplified Chinese: 实用主义; traditional Chinese: 實用主義; pinyin: shíyòngzhǔyì was crafted long after pragmatism became popular ...

Sorry but I don't see any difference in the Chines characters here. --Zenwort 09:30, 15 December 2014 (UTC) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Zenwort (talkcontribs)

Major Change on Hu's Philosophy and Political Views[edit]

Hello all,

I just added a huge section about Hu's philosophical and political thoughts. The previous section on Pragmatism has emerged into the new philosophy section.

Notice that many of the references are in Chinese.

If you have any suggestions please contact me.

Hu's Studies on Commentary on the Water Classic(水經注), Zen(禪宗), and Classical Chinese Literature[edit]

Recommend add more content on Hu's studies on Chinese classical literature, including his 中國章回小說考證, which is influencial in the history of Chinese classics studies. Hu also dedicated to Zen, a school of Mahayana Buddhism during his stay in Paris, London, and wrote a book The History of Chinese Zen(中國禪宗史). He also wrote about 100 commentaries on "Commentary on the Water Classic"(水經注) a comprehensive work of ancient Chinese geography. These information provides different prospectives of Hu's interests and the depth of his studies.

Minor change in introduction[edit]

Hello everyone , I have just made some minor change in the article, I have stated more clear that the Chinese writing of Hu Shih's name in both simplified Chinese and tradition Chinese writing. Also, I have said that Hu Shih was also a famous thinker in old China. Hope that helpful.Yc19990311 (talk) 04:10, 19 November 2020 (UTC)Cite error: There are <ref> tags on this page without content in them (see the help page).[reply]

Hu Shih vs. Zhang[edit]

I cleaned up the wording but the content is unclear. What is meant by “falling back in time”? Does it mean to fall behind? And if only dead people can maintain their reputations, then maybe falling behind the current trends is not a big problem; maybe it is an asset. If you know what the dispute with Zhang was actually about, please fix this poorly written section. Quchangsha (talk) 22:05, 10 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

The May Fourth Movement[edit]

As a new editor, I didn't want to do too much to the substance of this section; I think it has a lot of fundamental issues, namely a lack of objectivity and missing sources and hyperlinks to other relevant articles. It also doesn't include much detail about what the movement actually entailed. But these issues are out of my depth. However, I did take it upon myself to edit for grammar and clarity, cleaning up sentence fragments and filling in some gaps in the original author's intention with my (admittedly limited) knowledge of Hu Shih's life. Seeing as it isn't already a source, someone with more familiarity with site guidelines might consider citing Reminiscences of Hu Shih: Oral History, 1958. Having looked over it myself for a class, it seems to provide a lot of support, particularly for statements in this section about Hu Shih's perspective of it. I know I haven't fixed the section entirely (thus, the remaining template message), but I hope my grammatical rewrite sparks further discussion in the article of this aspect of Hu Shih's life and work. To add to article[edit]

Basic information to add to this article: a few words explaining exactly what "the famous Jiaxu manuscript" (甲戌本; Jiǎxū běn) is, since we don't yet have a Wikipedia article about this subject. 173.88.246.138 (talk) 02:07, 5 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Introduction/lead section is BAD[edit]

The lead section/introduction of this article is, as of the time of writing, a slopping mess. It generally fails to produce an adequate summary of Hu Shih's life, achievements nor influence (refer to WP:LEAD). For a figure of this magnitude of importance major changes needs to made ASAP.
