The article states that he was a Rhodes scholar at Queen's Oxford whereas the biography Biography claims it was Magdalen Oxford ("He was awarded a Rhodes Scholarship to Magdalen College, Oxford, leading to the degrees of B.Sc. and M.A. (1924)"). roundhouse 10:57, 29 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

  • Article is a newly promoted good article and certainly long enough. I see no neutrality issues, all statements in the article are referenced to inline citations with reliable sources. Earwig returns some false positives but this is due to the use of quotations. Both hooks are good, I personally think ALT1 may be preferable to emphasise the benefits of penicillin for those who may not be aware. QPQ is done, all images used in the article are correctly licensed and the image used with the hook is quite striking, so it would be great to see it used. Thanks User:Hawkeye7 for your fantastic work in bringing this article up to scratch - when you have someone as prominent as Florey I can appreciate how difficult it is to bring together a multitude of sources into a single piece. Pronunciation[edit]

I had to look at the article to understand this and find it says, His surname rhymes with "sorry". Note that a rhyme is not the same as a pronunciation and seems rather weaker. I reckon that the vowel sound will vary depending upon the speaker's accent. I'm British and would use a longer o for Florey than for sorry. Americans might give it more of an a sound as that's common for them. And Australians would be more nasal.
Anyway, I agree that IPA is best avoided per WP:NOTDIC and doubt that that there's any real need to say anything about this as it's not a complex case like Mainwaring or Featherstonhaugh. Is there supposed to be a significant alternative?

You can hear Florey pronounce his name in the Hazel de Berg interview in the external links. The problem is a common practice of pronouncing it like "story" instead of "sorry". Hawkeye7 (discuss) 18:25, 25 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
He leads off by saying "This is Howard Walter Florey..." . To my ear, he pronounces Florey just as I would. And, to me, this is more like "story" than "sorry". So, I suppose it depends how you expect those words to be spoken and our expectations must be different.
It was good to hear the man himself and so this link's description might make it clearer that it is a recording rather than a transcript. What struck me more than the pronunciation of his name, was that he didn't then have a strong Australian accent or twang. His voice sounded quite cultivated and RP. It reminds me of Tony Benn.

It's a cultivated Australian accent. Lots of older adults used to talk that way when I was a boy. I thought being able to hear the man himself was awesome. Few people follow external links. I'm glad someone did. Hawkeye7 (discuss) 09:36, 26 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Picture request[edit]

Thanks to Hawkeye7 for his work on this article, which I enjoyed reading this morning. As there's a picture request above, I thought I'd try to fill that and so popped over to Westminster Abbey. I've been inside there several times for free but today it was in tourist mode and it would have cost about £50 for the two of us to get in. This seemed a bit much for a quick photo of something which is easy to view online. So, we moved on to Chinatown and spent the money on some wonton noodle soup instead. I'll try again another day when attending a service – the Sunday organ recitals are good.

If Hawkeye7 has any other pending requests for images in the London area, they should feel free to ask me direct and I'll see what I can do.
