Nothing to do with religion

This is utter rubbish about holidays, it has nothing to do with religion. A holiday is time of work either just staying at home or going abroad!

Ive never read such a misleading page needs work… — Preceding unsigned comment added by 176.27.115.3 (talk) 11:52, 25 December 2013 (UTC)

1. I think your second sentence is meant to contain the word "off" rather than "of". Correct? (The meanings are very different.)
2. The word DID derive from "holy day", but has little to do with that for most western people today.
3. The article IS a mess. It was initially written almost exclusively using the American definition, which seems to mean every day of special celebration or commemoration, and includes things like Mothers Day, and Halloween. More recently attempts have been made to have it cover the definition used in the UK and Australia (the one I'm most familiar with) which is time away from normal work or school, or travel. The hatnotes at the beginning don't match what the article says. We possibly need separate articles. HiLo48 (talk) 17:48, 25 December 2013 (UTC)
