Chronology conflict[edit]

It says that Tahiti was settled by Polynesians from Tonga; whereas it says Tonga was settled later than Tahiti. This is incongruous. I gather the history isn't settled but perhaps this should be cleaned up? 49.199.26.34 (talk) 08:57, 3 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

whoops the article I was referring to is the history of Tonga etc — Preceding unsigned comment added by 49.199.26.34 (talk) 09:08, 3 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]
also it says Easter Island is one of the youngest etc etc yet its settlement could predate New Zealand by up to a thousand years 49.199.26.34 (talk) 09:15, 3 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Article structure and focus[edit]

Currently this article is a summary of the history of each Pacific island nation, usually excerpted from an early version of its article. This results in a lot of sections, and a cleanup tag which is never going away. But I'm wondering what value it adds. To the extent that its trying to cover the history of the Pacific as a geographic region, that seems to already be covered by History of Oceania (as well as Polynesia, Micronesia, and (to a lesser extent) Melanesia). If its just trying to summarise each country's history, I'm not sure that that's a good focus for an article (rather than just point readers to other stuff). I'm also wondering why east and south-east Asian countries - Japan, Indonesia, Malaysia and the Philippines are included. Yes, they're "islands in the Pacific", but no-one really thinks of them as "Pacific islands" or "Pacific island countries". So I'm wondering if we can at least split or eliminate some of that content to give the article a tighter focus. --IdiotSavant (talk) 01:53, 31 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
