Removing PROD[edit]

Progress[edit]

Earlier, I was the editor for quite a bit of the history portions of the main article. Now that we have progressed to have the history as a sub-article, I have rewritten the lead and moved several non-chronological section to be grouped together at the end. I share the hope that we will have some collaboration by other editors and the items listed can be properly researched and referenced and included. Official title explanation[edit]

The reason that the word "The" is capitalized in this article's title is because it is part of W&M's official college name. As such, it needs to be capitalized. History of The College of William & Mary → History of the College of William & Mary – A technical request for this move was declined because of the above comment. I don't like to question the judgment of comments from four years ago, but certainly now that's a poor explanation, primarily due to WP:THE and the parent article, College of William & Mary, which was unanimously moved to that title a few months ago. All other related articles and categories, as far as I can see, have been brought into line. The above comment is correct that "the" is part of the college's official name, but the actual official name is The College of William & Mary in Virginia, which is used about as often as "State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations." And as an alum, I can testify that we don't capitalize the T in running text. See, for example, the library, the main student paper, and the conservative student paper. --BDD (talk) 15:13, 10 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Plenty of detail; basic facts missing[edit]

I have now spent 15–20 mins. trying to find, in Wikipedia, the year William and Mary opened.  Not founded; opened.  Namely, when a bricks-and-mortar institution held its first classes.

Herein, we are given all kinds of other dates, for example of a "founding"—which by the way must be explicated:  Does it refer to an event on paper only, a la Harvard claiming to have been "founded" in 1636, which it was, but which refers only to a document, when the actual college didn't open until 1638?  Then we are told the year in which coats of arms were granted, legislative activities occurred, etc.  Then the article moves on to the 18th century, and I'm lost.

So, when did the college open; how many students were enrolled at opening; when did the first class graduate; how many graduated in that class; etc.?  Is it me or is it Memorex?  Am I all wet, or are those facts not ones one would expect to find in a history of a college?

That aside, the completeness and erudition of the article are commendable.

Ancient Campus vs Historic Campus[edit]

A somewhat picky note, but I changed "ancient campus" to "historic campus," since that is the term used by W&M and by historians who have written about W&M (Ex Wilford Kale). "Colonial" would also be more technically correct than "ancient," as the latter is typically reserved for the very distant past.
