A good start. This article clearly and simply lays out the life and military career of Count Terauchi. It's just a bit short. Is there any expansion possible? LordAmeth 13:08, 8 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Died before the End of the war?[edit]

How can this be, as I understand, with his surrender the war was over: "Terauchi was not able to attend the surrender ceremony as he had fallen ill due to a stroke. He surrendered personally to Mountbatten on 30 September 1945 in Saigon." (http://infopedia.nlb.gov.sg/articles/SIP_123_2005-02-03.html) According to the wikipedia article he died in June 1946! Grmf

Date of Death[edit]

According to "The Oxford Companion to World War II", Oxford University Press, Oxford, New York, p1105-6 "He suffered a cerebral haemorrhage the following year and was unable to attend the surrender ceremony in Singapore on 12 September 1945. Instead, he surrendered personally to *Mountbatten in Saigon on 30 November 1945. In March 1946 Mountbatten arranged for him to be transferred to a bungalow in Rengam, near Johore Bahru, Malaya, where he died that June." AthabascaCree (talk) 23:24, 6 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Stroke, April 10, 1945[edit]

According to Pacific War Online Encyclopedia: On 10 April 1945 he suffered from a stroke,

According to Mark Boatner, The Biographical Dictionary of WWII: Bad news from Burma (the fall of Mandalay) and of defeats in the Philippines caused the old field marshal a stroke on 10 Apr 45.

Alignment with Kodoha[edit]

According to various sources, https://blog.goo.ne.jp/hanada1954/e/88f985aadef2952432c671061ee78e76 (陸軍派閥一覧表) Terauchi actually was not aligned with the Kodoha faction, but with a faction that sympathizes with Kazushige Ugaki, the Governor-General of Korea from June 17, 1931 – August 5, 1936. In fact, there are sources suggest that he initiate a purge against the remaining Kodoha faction members during his time as interim Army Minister, including the Japanese Wiki.

Agree that this is what the best scholarly sources seem to say. This and this may be useful, though the later is rather dated and gives Terauchi's personal name as Juichi. The source claiming alignment with the Kodoha faction (Harries) is a popular history that may not be entirely reliable -- assuming it is being correctly cited here; I have a copy at home I can check this evening. Regardless, if it is true Terauchi purged the Kodoha, that is something that definitely should be mentioned here.--Kent G. Budge (talk) 14:15, 17 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks very much for your input. Currently the best solution in my opinion will be to add in the mention of the purging of Kodoha with the first source you provided. I'm glad to hear that you have a copy of the source claiming Terauchi's alignment with Kodoha and is willing to check whether or not it is sourced correctly.
