The apple of love and the apple of discord?? Needs more context, and how does that make sense, we're talking three, not two, apples and they have no symbolic function here except as a part of another ruse by a guy to get ahead of a woman. Who turned them into lions?[edit]

The article says that Hippomenes and Atalanta were "turned into lions by Cybele as punishment after having sex in one of her temples". But the article for Atalanta says "Zeus or his mother Rhea turned Atalanta and Hippomenes into lions" after they were caught making love in Zeus' temple, or alternatively that "Aphrodite changed them into lions because they did not give her proper honor". There aren't references for these. The Oxford Classical Dictionary mentions transformation by Zeus or Cybele, but not by Aphrodite. Do all three of these appear in various stories?
