As weed[edit]

The "Plant pest" section just mentions New Zealand, but at least some species are considered weeds in a lot of other places (Australia and the United States seemed to come up in a few searches, but I didn't try to find everywhere this might be true). I think in the US, some noxious weed or other legal definitions have failed to adequately distinguish between the non-native weeds and native endemic species (if I understand the story right, the latter were not significant problems in pastures or other such places), although I can't find a reference for that now. If anyone knows more about this, or where to look, improving this section would be very helpful. Kingdon (talk) 01:44, 13 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Common names translation[edit]

I've removed the transwiki tag from the "Common names" section as there's no need to transwiki the entire article over to Wiktionary, which is what that template asks for. If the translations will be of use at en.wikt, then they can be copied over manually. Hersfold (t/a/c) 23:58, 20 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Orange hawkweed European native[edit]

I see my edit of the list of European varieties of hawkweed - to add orange hawkweed - has been reverted. I have it growing in my garden in the UK and the Wikipedia entry on Pilosella aurantiaca (aka Hieracium aurantiacum) says "native to alpine regions of central and southern Europe". In what way is this plant not European (as well as growing in the US)?Richwil (talk) 09:01, 22 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]

The issue is that Pilosella aurantiaca is no longer included in Hieracium. It is very definitely a European species.Plantsurfer 10:38, 22 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Exactly. This is a good example of how English names can be misleading. Not all plants called "hawkweeds" are now placed in the genus Hieracium. Peter coxhead (talk) 15:05, 22 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]
