Socialised medicine?

Socialised medicine? Given the restrictive criteria for a medical card and the extensive private system I'd be hard pressed to cite Ireland as an example of "socialised" medicine. Please bear in mind the reference must back the claim. One should not have to wear rose-tinted glasses or be on a high to believe the reference. References please, and quality ones at that! Djegan (talk) 22:54, 15 May 2008 (UTC)

Well for one thing, to be any of those things doesn't mean they have to be free at the point of delivery; such as the NHS. Even countries such as Sweden don't have "free" healthcare; just socialised.

Public = publicly funded [ie. by tax] - the health contribution comes out of income to fund the HSE.

Universal = everyone has the right to access the public health care system.

Socialisied = medical services available for free or at a discounted rate.

This confirms all of these;

Ireland has a comprehensive government funded health service.

A person living in Ireland for at least one year is considered by the HSE to be 'ordinarily resident' and is entitled to either full eligibility (Category 1) or limited eligibility (Category 2), for health services.

No. You must provide a reference that explicitly supports whats been claimed, otherwise the material maybe removed at any time. We do not need or want a lesson on how to use a dictionary. Nor do we need a series of external links that vaguely (in the most extreme sense of the word) backup what is been claimed. If the "reference" does not explicitly supports whats been claimed then its insufficient and maybe removed (along with the claim). Simple. Djegan (talk) 18:15, 16 May 2008 (UTC)

Infrastructure in private hands?

Is it true to say that most infrastructure is in private hands? I very much doubt this, but don't know of any figures that support or contradict it?

also, is it true there's only one MRI machine in the whole of the republic? - 98.212.218.182 (talk) 19:47, 2 March 2008 (UTC)

That is not true, there are roughly 30 MRI machines in the republic. However most of the hospitals as far as I know are state funded but not state owned. They are normally held by trusts and limited companies. This is a relic of church ownership of most hospitals.Cros13 (talk) 09:57, 12 January 2010 (UTC)

The title of this entry is wrong. The constitutional name of Ireland is "Ireland" not the Republic of Ireland. [1]
