Official name[edit]

I take it you were educated at HACC.

Advertising slogan[edit]

"Central Pennsylvania's Community College" is an advertising slogan. HACC happens to be the only "community college" in south-central Pennsylvania. It's official motto is "scientia restituo verum" Latin for 'knowlege restores truth'...which is on the official raised seal used by the college. Wrightchr 06:48, 9 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

It has been 6 years, but this discussion needs to be raised again. A tag line does not belong in an article title. The college's name is simply HACC, and what's more, there is not even a need for a disambiguation page since no other article exists with the acronym "HACC." -- DanielKlotz (talk · contribs) 02:19, 9 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
The institution itself clearly does not consider the tag line part of its name, as made clear in the usage in this sentence from the website's history page: "Today, as Central Pennsylvania’s Community College, HACC has many strengths..." -- DanielKlotz (talk · contribs) 11:51, 9 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
The school is accredited under the name Harrisburg Area Community College. See http://www.msche.org/institutions_view.asp?idinstitution=258 additionally, name changes are noted, so that for example Stevenson University has a subtitle: Formerly:Villa Julie College (2008 and prior years)" So it is quite clear that the accredidation body doesn't consider the school to have ever changed its name. Based on that, it might make sense to change the name of the Article to "Harrisburg Area Community College"... --Naraht 9 August 2012

So, I'd say "Central Pennsylvania's Community College" is definitely not part of the common name. "Harrisburg Area Community College" seems to have a slight edge over HACC. And in borderline cases, I think using the full name is a bit more encyclopedic (see for example, University of California, Los Angeles, not UCLA). But there's also something to be said for preferring a newer name over an older name, to avoid the appearance of being outdated. (They may not have "officially" changed their name to HACC, but it seems to be what they're trying to present as the school's name.) Thank you for that good and helpful research. After a look at the publications you mention, most refer to "Harrisburg Area Community College" first and then use "HACC" thereafter (and in headlines). Good Research, I got similar results when googling the pa.us domain to see how the state refers to it. Thanks for the invitation. I don't think it's correct to move it to "Harrisburg Area Community College." That's not the name of the school; a similar example is how ESPN changed their name from Entertainment and Sports Programming Network to ESPN, Inc. HACC did the same thing years ago. In regards to the "Central Pennsylvania's Community College" portion, you'll take notice that any press release by the school specifically calls the school "HACC, Central Pennsylvania’s Community College."

I agree that those press releases talk about it as HACC, but I found something interesting when I googled for "Harrisburg Area Community College" at hacc.edu which is that a lot of pages have it. While I thought that it might be because the phrase is in the keywords (to help people find it in websearchers), it isn't. It is in the *copyright* notice. So the school still feels that "Harrisburg Area Community College" belongs in any copyright notice *and* as stated above it is accredited under the name "Harrisburg Area Community College". Also, they are still using both terms in the Minutes of the Board of Trustee meetings in 2011! http://www.hacc.edu/AboutUs/Administration/customcf/openform.cfm?FID=1250 (yes it says HACC at the top, but the "therefore" in the the Resolution says Harrisburg Area Community College). I also called the school at the 1-800 number. The person answered the phone with "H A C C Central Pennsylvania's Community College", but when I asked simply "What is the legal name of the school" (note, I did not give choices), the answer was "Harrisburg Area Community College" Based on all this, I still support the move back.
Calling 1-800-ABC-HACC is also not a legitimate source information for Wikipedia. Again, as I've already stated, the school uses the name "HACC, Central Pennsylvania's Community College" on all of it's documentation as it's name. The old name "Harrisburg Area Community College" is a colloquialism, which is not allowed on Wikipedia. --User:Hmich176 (talk) 18:09, 10 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I agree that it is not a legitimate source, I was mostly curious. And "Harrisburg Area Community College" *is* used in official documentation, see the Minutes of the Board of Trustee meetings or the Sping Enrollment Report(http://www.hacc.edu/AboutUs/Administration/InstitutionalResearchandPlanning/upload/Spring-2012-Enrollment-Report-data.pdf ). Of the four that I listed above, I think the fact that it is accredited under the "Harrisburg Area Community College" name is more significant. You indicated when the article moved that you had gotten confirmation from a specific person, but I couldn't find any documentation on a legal name change for the school. "Colloquialisms" actually are the main basis for how articles are named. See WP:COMMONNAME. Any discussion of the school's "official" name is secondary to the question of what name is primarily used by reliable sources. Toohool (talk) 02:19, 11 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I presume you mean the information this edit on 9 August 2012. I also noticed that article title complaint on this page for some time ago, which shows how the article was moved to its current title.
