Madge[edit]

In Hambledon, Hampshire, I saw the link [[Cunt|Madge]]. My first reaction was vandalism. Can you justify this odd link? Perhaps a note on the article's talk page if you meant it. -- RHaworth 23:26, 2005 Jun 26 (UTC)

jguk is taking a wikibreak. I have also heard the story of Madge and afaik, what he has written is true. Please let it be. I'll try to find some authentic source and more background. Tintin 28 June 2005 06:51 (UTC)

It's quite true. Derek Birley in The Willow Wand makes (a less explicit) reference to the point. He is more coy in his A Social History of English cricket, where he just says "Madge" is a what, not a who. However, it is good 18th century slang, which I think is still preserved in a few rugby songs if you care to search on the web for it. Of course, I could have been more tactful in how the points was made, but it's a fair informative point, jguk 28 June 2005 20:27 (UTC)

The problem I see with the piped link to cunt is that there's no mention of the toast in the target article. So, someone clicks on the link, and is inexplicably taken to a most unexpected article. Either some mention needs to be added to "cunt," or there needs to be a short explanation here. (I prefer an explanation here, as this is a quite short article). As it is, it appears to be vandalism, especially to a casual user who wouldn't think to look here on the talk page for an explanation. Joyous (talk) 19:12, 18 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]
