The Navy Board model he built to present to the Board for approval is in the collection of the Trinity House museum in England. The ship is highly ornamented as was the custom of the time. As much as 20-25% of the cost of such a ship would have been directed to fancy work, carvings and ornamentation. It is built in the traditional 1/48 scale (1/4 inch = 1 ft). The name for the ship was a result of Charles II and James' penchant for naming warships for their mistresses or offspring by those ladies, hence, Charles sired a son by Nell Gwynn (his wife was Katherine of Breganza) and his name was James (or John or Charles) Beauclerk. He was the first Duke of St Albans. A well-executed copy of St Albansby August Crabtree (1905-1994) is in The Mariners' Museum in Newport News, VA, USA.63.215.28.116 (talk) 14:27, 7 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
