Untitled[edit]

I doubt the coordinates given in this article are correct, since I hardly can imagine WWII HMS residing somewhere in Ukraine :) Akhavr (talk) 10:55, 6 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Confusing passage[edit]

"her hull welded, with the midsection riveted to ensure strength"

Which of those two, welding or riveting, was being used to ensure strength? I suspect it is the welding, but the wording suggests the opposite. It is also not clear why they didn't just weld the entire ship, which I suspect was time, but this should be clarified. Maury Markowitz (talk) 12:12, 8 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Based on existing sources, riveting was for strength whilst the relatively new electric welding was being tested for areas that would be under less stress. There is some background to this: riveting was traditionally the major way to building ships before the war, with the latest welding techniques for large scale structures being developed in the thirties. Riveting itself has good properties against shearing and since the bulk of the ship is the midsection it was felt best to keep it traditional here and then try out the new welding techniques fore and aft, where the rivet less joints improved speed through reduced drag. Specifically with regards to Cavalier and her sister ship this was due to where they were being built: The dockyard, J. Samuel White & Co., had been heavily damaged in bombing and in the rebuild sought to follow up the Admiralty's interest in the use of electric welding for shipbuilding. They built new facilities that allowed for large scale prefabricated welding sections to be produced that could then be easily brought across to the slipway for final assembly. It was at this time that women were introduced to the work force, specifically to handle the new welding equipment.
