Melbourne Victory[edit]

Melbourne Victory signed Gui in 2012 and after leading the A-League in goal assists but not scoring at all, Gui was badly injured. Gui has become a fan favourite over the past 3 years (2012-14) at Aami Park among Melbourne football fans, and with good reason. He features in a multi-lingual "Wipe off 5 and stay alive" advertisement on television, speaking in his native Portugese, however his origins lie in a southern province of Brazil, settled by Italian migrants. The region is named Rio Grande Do Sol, or big river in the south - on the border of Australia's arch-nemises Uruguay! The Melbourne Age article here [1] claims Gui is a "Sau Paulo native" however I think this journolist is wrong: his 1st 2 listed clubs are Palmeros and Caxias from the south of Brazil - and his birthplace, as well as on the Portugese and English versions of wikipedia, is in Caxias du sol: this is corroberated on transfermarkt (which lists his vaule at 400k euros - and expect this number to rise before his contract is up at the end of 2013/14 season) here [2]

Speaking as a Melbourne Victory member, I am the person that took responsibility for keeping his English wiki updated - because there was nothing on it. From the time of his injury (before he became a real cult hero at Aami Park) I felt that he had so much potential in those 2012 games - even before he scored a goal. There is a note on the main page saying that it may be written from a fan's perspective - so I have moved any "talk" over to this page. I am happy to discuss things, if anyone else wants to contribute - and the facts are real but a lot of the information is firsthand. For instance, last night (22/2) he did not take the RHS corners. But he did take them from the left. Why? Tom Rogic wasn't taking them, and he is the only new face. This is not reported anywhere. I am not privvy to the inner workings of the club, I am just trying to keep a record of his time here. I do wish for Finkler to remain at Melbourne, and would implore Kevin Muscat, Ian Robson and the powers that be, to do everything they can to re-sign Finkler, who I belive is in Melbourne with his wife and family, and although I do not know him personaly, the weather is similar here to Caxias du Sol. Victory have given him the support to come back from a potentially career ending injury and the fans (except for the Northern Terrace) were all on their feet almost willing him to take the free kick that brought down the house against Wanderers --- not Wolverhampton Wanderers, the club that never gave him a single game --- but Western Sydney Wanderers, the club that he was playing when almost one year of his career was ended - just when he was getting going, in fact at that time, January 3, 2013, Finkler led the A-League in goal assists (7).

After Gui Finkler scored 2 equalisers on the 22nd of February while playing his first complete match for the Victory he hit the top 10 in the race for the golden boot. He has not been selected to play against Evergrande in China and if this trend continues (choosing Pablo Contreras over Finkler in ACL matches as the marquee player) and if Victory continue to score in the league, there is a possibility that Finkler could be a contender for top scorer this season. If this happens, I am sure there will be additional interest in this page. This is the place to talk about Finkler in a non-encylopedic manner, the main page is a list of his accomplshments on the field and any other information of note, such as his appearance in the TAC road safety television ad campaign. Melbourne Victory Cult Hero[edit]

After 3 home losses to Western Sydney, a hoodoo was beginning to form. Once again Victory created 10's of chances and once again were caught on the counter attack - this time by Brendan Santalab (a striker with a name like that has to score at Christmas time but Victory's captain Mark Milligan was robbed during yet another assault on the Wanderers goal, and paid the price). Troisi, having created and taken quite a few shots, was the surprise substitution bringing Finkler into the match at the 66th minute. Gui had an immediate impact on the game, moving the ball cleverly to Nichols who missed by less than a foot. After this the physical Wanderers put Gui on the ground 3 times - twice giving away free kicks. The first - like previous set pieces, was an aerial ball, and the Wanderers cleared it. The RBB (Traveling Wanderers fans) let off half a dozen flares, and what sounded like 5 or 6 train detonators - it was an extremely intense atmosphere. The north end behind the Victory goal in the 2nd half was having one of its "silent protests", which they have been trying on for over 4 years now, and, if Gui had not scored, the best thing about the night of 28/12/2013 would be that the west wing, the north west, and the south end were all on their feet when, after a darting run towards the Wanderers goal, Finkler was brought down 22 yards out, with the best part of 93 minutes on the clock. He subsequently scored the equalising goal from the free kick which was the last play of the game. The author was standing near the corner flag close to the player, and although an opinion, thinks that Finkler initially intended to bend the ball around to try to find a Victory player. However the entirety of both teams were on the edge of the box, and the linesman had been flag happy up that end all night - only Ante Covic will know for sure, but Finkler, from 25 metres out curled a beautiful ball into the back of the Wanderers goal. With a Traore/Barbarouses goal disallowed seemingly because ex-Glory hard man Dean Heffernan fell over in front of Adama while he was attacking (I cannot remember ever seeing a striker give away a free kick for getting tangled with a defender whilst dribbling the ball into the box) Finkler's goal felt like a winner. The match ended seconds later, the red & black bloc were drowned out without any noise from the north end and Finkler suddenly has 3 goals for the season, and an assist!!

Spot-kick Responsibilty - Finkler Faith Pays off[edit]

In round 18 almost a year and a month to the day since his ACL injury, away against Perth Glory after back to back 0-5 defeats, Gui was called on at 0-0 in the first half to take the club's 1st spot kick of the season. Finkler scored sending the keeper the wrong way, and answered the fans' question about who, in the absence of Mark Milligan (Melbourne Victory captain/deep mf/cb/rb & spot-kick taker) could take on the responsibility during season 2013/14. With confidence at an all time low, stand in captain Leigh Broxham had the faith to select Finkler as the man for the job, not just to take the penalty after Archie Thompson was brought down in the box, but to stop the rot after over 4 hours of football without a scoring goal - while conceding 10 in the 2 previous matches including a 5-0 home loss to Sydney FC, who had not won a match in the previous 6 outings, and had been beaten by a 10 man Melbourne Heart just an hour earlier.... needless to say, the leadership at Melbourne was rewarded. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Henryvenn (talkcontribs) 12:10, 2 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]
