Roman amphorae discovered in Guanabara Bay[edit]

I am concerned about the reference to Roman amphorae discovered in Guanabara Bay. The source listed for it is a forum posting from Free Republic, whose mission statement is: "Broadly stated, the goals of this site are to further conservatism, expose political corruption, and recover a truly constitutional form of government. As a conservative site, Free Republic is pro-God, pro-life, pro-family, pro-Constitution, pro-Bill of Rights, pro-gun, pro-limited government, pro-private property rights, pro-limited taxes, pro-capitalism, pro-national defense, pro-freedom, and pro-America." There is also no reference to any substantial lithic analysis to prove the amphorae are European in origin, though I have not been able to review any reports written by Robert Marx on the finds or related digs. I have eliminated the reference until we can find more reliable sources corroborating the story.Ninarosa 04:53, 22 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Here are just three of many sources of this information: [1], [2], [3]. -- Jack of Oz [Talk] 00:53, 8 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Dubious - Name of the city[edit]

The explanation given here for the naming of Rio de Janerio is disputed on the Rio de Janerio page: "There is a legend that the Portuguese mariners named Rio thus because they thought the mouth of the bay was actually the mouth of a river, but no experienced sailor would make that mistake. At the time, river was the general word for any large body of water. The city was founded on March 1, 1565." GBM (talk) 11:41, 4 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Graben[edit]

Article says that Guanabara Bay is a graben. Somehow I feel there should be at least a word about this fact on GB's article. It would be even more interesting to have at least a section on its geology. Unfortunately I'm not competent on this matter to include some paragraphs myself, so I'm just throwing the idea. When did Guanabara Bay start being called by that name by white people?[edit]

'As a result, the name of the bay was soon fixed as Rio de Janeiro. Later, the city was named after the bay.' is what is in the article now. Is the bay still referred to as Rio de Janeiro by anyone? If not, when did people stop? There is also 'The name Guanabara comes from the Tupi language, goanã-pará, from gwa "bay", plus nã "similar to" and ba'ra "sea". Traditionally, it is also translated as "the bosom of sea". ' but this is very vague. According to whom? Was the name ever applied to the whole bay? If so, when?
