It is hard to say why it has taken so many years for web developers to become interested in something that has been essential to the written medium in general since the 30s.

I think that the sentence try to say that there's no obvious single reason about it, but a lot of cooperating reasons that nobody could tell how much weight they had on that issue. I would replace that text with something like: "The web developed slowly techniques to apply print grid systems to pages and even today the process isn't automatic as much as you can achieve with softwares like InDesign for print: grids are still relatively hard to build, and it's not something given, making them an explicit choice instead of a stated foundation." --Folletto (talk) 14:38, 25 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Why not drop this paragraph entirely? The term "page" in context of the web is meant metaphorically for the content of a html file in a browser window, and not for a printed piece of paper of a specific size. It's not exactly apples and oranges, but IMHO the specifications for both kinds of layout are to different for a direct comparison. The only sensible way of incorporating web design into this article would be a short overview over the possibilities of a grid based layout in HTML, Flash etc, and possible restrictions - not a biased discussion of either "web designers are way behind" or "not our fault, it's the software" ... --JBirken (talk) 19:39, 7 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Both hands for dropping or rewriting the paragraph. It'd be better to write about grid usage in popular frameworks like Blueprint or how to use it with popular design software rather than producing badly camouflaged insults against web developers. Yes, grids are not around very long, but aren't there beautiful and well-thought layouts made without them? The article needs to be expanded to include grid use in developing type styles and individual graphics such as logos. I'm going to rename the article to "Grid (graphic design)" and hopefully it will invite other editors in the wikiproject graphic design or wikiproject visual arts to expand it.
