Viniculture[edit]

two comments[edit]

This is an interesting and well-written article on a topic that deserves more attention, as it's extremely important in correcting misconceptions about the Celts of Gaul and their later relations with Rome. Thanks.

Two suggestions:

There are too many images with the article, which causes graphics clutter and problems of alignment. Since there's already a gallery, would be it possible to keep images with the text they most directly illustrate, while moving some others to the gallery? Or even deleting some? Maybe some of the coins could be sacrificed, or moved to an article dealing with the influence of Greek coinage on that of Gaul.

The legend "Gauls" on the map (don't know whether this can be fixed) seems too far north, as if to exclude regions inhabited by important peoples such as the Aedui, Arverni, and Allobroges. Perhaps also it needs to be given a date for the period, since it places "Celtic tribes" in areas usually thought of as Germanic, and confines "Germanic tribes" to the region usually assumed to have produced the ambiguous Cimbri. The distinction intended between "Gauls" and "Celtic tribes" is unclear to me. (The Gauls in northern Italy were Celtic speakers, for instance.) In other words, there are some potential points of controversy with it.

These two concerns about the graphics certainly don't overshadow the quality of the text. Cynwolfe (talk) 23:14, 4 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

layout[edit]

I tried to address the many layout problems in this article, which has far too many images in relation to text. Some of the captions were quite long, too, which also takes up space. This information is best amplified in the text of the article; in streamlining them, I don't think I lost any information, but if so, please consider restoring it to the body text, and not expanding the caption.

Also, I deleted the "French government" template, because really, is that so relevant here? The "French history" template I've put in a most unorthodox place, with the notes (with requires making them one-column). Choices have to be made, as the article had become utterly unreadable as it was. If substantial additional text is added, this could certainly be revisited.
