We don't list all NC langs at Niger-Congo, nor all AN langs at Austronesian, but rather list them under their various branches, so why insist on duplicating these languages at Andamanese? That simply makes the articles difficult to maintain, and differences creep in when one version is updated and the other is not. kwami (talk) 19:34, 13 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Since Andamanese (about a dozen languages) is neither Niger-Congo nor Austronesian (each with one hundred times as many languages), that's like comparing elephants and titmice. It would be better, I think, to have the overall classification at Andamanese with a reference from here to there. But this family is so small, and there is such precious little change in scholarship on them from year to year (actually decade to decade), that having two classification charts on them is not really a problem. The second is a valid point. For the first, however, you're assuming this is actually a family, which even the author of the Indo-Pacific hypothesis didn't buy. If the Andamanese hypothesis is ever demonstrated, it still wouldn't be relevant, since we normally don't repeat language listings at different levels, even for the smallest branches within NC and AN, or within the smallest small families. But, as you say, there is perhaps little practical significance here. kwami (talk) 04:43, 14 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]
If you're not buying into Andamanese as a valid family, then you've got a point. I'm not invested either way. But the practical effect is still virtually zero. The book published by Lincom a few years ago was the first comparative Andamanese scholarship in decades. Cheers. (Taivo (talk) 11:01, 14 August 2009 (UTC))[reply]

Differences[edit]

I would definitely like to find out more about the individual languages. The article (and the articles about the individual languages) inform us about the family as a whole, and tell us where each language was spoken and when it got extinct. But it doesn't inform us about the differences between them. Well, there is a table comparing the body part prefixes in some of them, but that's not enough to draw conclusions about sound correspondences, much less about any differences in grammar.
