The Sphinx[edit]

This song cycle for voice and orchestra was written in 1941. It was based on Oscar Wilde's poem The Sphinx, which is a long poem of about 85 verses. I presume Bantock took certain verses and turned them into discrete songs. I've looked in vain for the actual texts he used. I want to make some reference to them at Music based on the works of Oscar Wilde. Can anyone help out? -- JackofOz (talk) 23:51, 27 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Bantock entry in Modern Musicians by Hadden[edit]

There's an entry in the Hadden book with biographical details and a photo. Hadden died in 1914 (the book was first published 1913 and then reprinted twice in 1918). As far as US laws are concerned this book qualifies for Public Domain status having been published before 1923. UK law (book source) states authors life + 70 years. I'll probably scan the photo and use it here. The book also has an extensive quote by his RA master Corder. Also details his salary and the instruments in the orchestra of his travelling troupe and has many other details. I'll scan the book (if it is in the public domain in the UK) and put it up at the Internet Archive (unless someone's already done so at Gutenberg, etc). Hadden does mention in the introduction that his source material for these biographies was almost non-existent with only a few books available due to these all being new artists. Hadden says (1913) that he drew upon the magazine The Strad for entries on violinist and cellists. He also credits an American writer Mr Henry C Lahee for the details supplied for the "Pianists, Singers and Violinists" sections. Some of the biographies have photos (all should be public domain now) and there's a nice section on pianists and singers.

I've just checked - its already available at the Internet Archive: [1] [2] Sluffs (talk) 13:42, 22 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Selected works[edit]

Shouldn't this be a separate article? Martinevans123 (talk) 20:15, 11 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

New Brighton Tower[edit]

New Brighton Tower was under construction between 1896 and 1900. How come Granville Bantock is stated to have conducted there in 1897 - or was it somewhere else in New Brighton? P0mbal (talk) 23:27, 23 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]
