6/30/2016: little edit? NO SAYS CLUEBOT![edit]

hey i'm an anonymous person who was just doing a lil wikipedia safari today and i noticed that gorilla monsoon's page here had a "commentary style" section that mentioned some of his phrases and it had "Pandemonium is running wild! You can cut it with a knife!" Outside of that actually making no sense on its own, I happened to grow up watching WWE and I remember his phrases "Pandemonium is running wild! The electricity (in here) is so thick you can cut it with a knife!" so i quickly popped over to edit that little bit about the electricity in so that way the "you can cut it with a knife!" makes sense.

but then a little bit later as my safari had me looking at other pages i was notified that i had a message (odd since i'm not logged in or anything) and it was from a ClueBot saying that it reverted my change cuz [whatever]; looking up cluebot i see it's an anti-troll measure and somehow it must have arbitrarily decided that an anonymous IP addy making a tiny little change like that was most likely vandalism and not anything substantial. So i formally filled out the box to protest the ClueBot-smackdown (wrestling pun lamentably intended) and at the risk of a repeat to more drastic measures i re-instituted the change just now because, hey, you know i'm just doing my little part to help out wikipedia in that people who read the gorilla monsoon article in the future won't be like "huh? whats this business about cutting pandemonium-running-wild with a knife all about?" while they can properly learn about one of gorilla's phrases re: thick electricity.

so yeah my bad to devote a cpl paragraphs in talkback here to a minor lil thing, but i just wanted to do my part to plead my case to say that I AM NOT A TROLL and i only intended to help out wikepedia and/or the greater good with my factually-correct edit. trust me on this one, while i am having a bit of a hard time getting through the abstract of "you can cut it with a knife!" results to find gorilla stuff, i know he said that because it was hardwired into my head circa ages 7-11. that's what gorilla said! someone hook me up to a lie detector! =D

Bruno Sammartino Incident

Bill Watts states in his autobiograhy that he witnessed a backstage confrontation between Sammartino and Monsoon. He states that Monsoon quickly found himself in hot water during the incident. Does anyone know the details of the incident?

Gorilla Monsoon (wrestler) → Gorilla Monsoon — He is easily the primary meaning for the name (and was at the target page until about a month ago when a user moved it without discussing it). For over 35 years he was known as Gorilla Monsoon, as both a wrestler and a commentator and on-screen president of the WWF. Much more prominent than a German metal band, and far more than a fake show from improv group Picnicface Comedy (which doesn't even mention the fake show in their article).   • Support I was looking for Gorilla Monsoon's page and was surprised at the disambiguation page. The above comment mentions how the comedy group article is pretty much pointless, I want to add that the article on the band is terribly written.   • Support. Band is named after the wrestler and still relatively obscure. As for a fictional show that appears only in a single YouTube video, it's borderline whether that information even qualifies as encyclopedic. So the wrestler is the primary meaning, for our purposes. Hall of Fame[edit]

He was the very first inductee into the WWF Hall of Fame on June 19, 1994.

This is not true. Andre the Giant was the first inductee into the Hall of Fame in 1993, in fact the hall of fame was created to honour Andre. This should be removed. --Tregelen (talk) 05:47, 6 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Gorilla and Heenan had been commentating together since at least September of 1986.

All-Asiatic Champion?[edit]

I just watched the Ali-incident on youtube and Monsoon was announced as "The All-Asiatic Champion." Was this just made up for this event? I don't seem this "title" listed anywhere else. Jackbox1971 (talk) 02:09, 21 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

The "event" in question was a WWWF television taping. The McMahons were desperate to create interest in Ali vs. Inoki, as every indication beforehand was that it was going to bomb in the United States. This is why they damn near dragged Bruno Sammartino out of the hospital to return against Stan Hansen. Anyway, to actually address your point, "titles" such as that were commonly thrown around by announcers in those days without regard as to whether they were legit titles.RadioKAOS (talk) 19:50, 12 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Bogosity check[edit]

McMahon needed a new announcer team to head up his television programming, and installed Marella with the recently retired Jesse "The Body" Ventura as the new announcing team.

Before North America at large began viewing WWF programming, the WWF taped and aired full-length house shows from Madison Square Garden, the Spectrum in Philadelphia and the Boston Garden, which aired (and in the case of MSG, for a great many years) on regional cable sports channels. They also later did the same thing at the Capital Centre, which aired on the USA Network (as they were based in the D.C. area in those days, it was akin to the other arrangements, even though USA aired nationally). Monsoon did the annnoucing for most of these shows, replacing Vince McMahon on the MSG shows and Kal Rudman on the Spectrum shows. Proposed edit[edit]

"Although remembered fondly by many viewers, Monsoon was voted Worst Television Announcer a record six times by readers of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter in the publication's annual awards poll."

I understand taking the good with the bad, but can we move this part down further into the article? I feel like it tarnishes his legacy having it in the opening paragraph. Kane had "Worst Feud of the Year" seven times, but you don't see that mentioned in the opening paragraph, or anywhere else in the article other than "accomplishments". I was surprised to see this content myself, but I do think it belongs in the lede. For better or worse, the Wrestling Observer is the pre-eminent wrestling newsletter, and its readers voted Monsoon the worst announcer in the business a record six times. Besides the inherent notability of the Observer, multiple writers have covered the result, asserting its value.[1][2][3] Kane is a false equivalency because he was never voted worst wrestler. And then there's WP:OTHERSTUFF.
I've tweaked things a bit. Besides hosting the Observer result, the lede now notes that Monsoon had the "Gorilla Position" named in his honour, is remembered fondly by many, and is regarded as half of the greatest commentary duo in history.
