To Those Inquiring About Ranking

On the GaWC website, ranking terminology is clearly defined as well as the criteria a city must meet to reach a certain level. New York City and London represent global centers of trade, economy, culture, and language, and are categorized as such. The information on this page is directly from the GaWC website, any grievances should be addressed accordingly.

As for the other listings, please note the order in which Alpha, Beta, and Gamma cities appear does NOT reflect a list ranking. All cities in a certain list category list should be treated as equals. For example, although Bangalore is at the beginning of the Beta City list and Beirut is at the end, that does NOT classify Bangalore higher than Beirut. Both cities are ranked equally.

Please also note: the order in which cities are categorized (+/-) and listed in the categories are as they appear on the GaWC official ranking page

Many also need to realize that since the West is generally the center of global trade and economic growth, more Western cities will appear on the list and ranked accordingly. Simply because a city has major cultural significance to a local population or country, does not mean it is a major player in the global system. Cities such as Rome, Cologne, and Islamabad all represent portals in which the local populace interacts with the world.

Probably one of the most stupid articles on Wikipedia

Why are we using a ranking system that is not commonly used? Forget arguing whether it is arbitrary or not (you can apply criteria objectively, but who decides what is in the criteria?) - it is trivial and pompous as it is pointless.

Every time I go to a Wikipedia article about a city I roll my eyes whenever the introduction makes reference to this dim-witted ranking system, in between far more vital facts about its population, history etc.

San Jose

The list of Beta cities includes San Jose, which is a link to a disambiguation page. Is this intended to refer to the city in California? That the other most likely possibility, the city in Costa Rica, is already on the Gamma list suggests that it probably is, but the source was unclear. Egsan Bacon (talk) 20:42, 7 June 2017 (UTC)

The 2012 list is currently used and the source [1] shows "San Jose (Ca)" below an unspecified "San Jose" which can only be Costa Rica. I have fixed the article.[2] PrimeHunter (talk) 22:00, 7 June 2017 (UTC)

Kaohsiung

Did it not make the GaWC study ranking? Kaihsu (talk) 08:35, 9 August 2017 (UTC)

Presumably so. Taipei made it, so it's unlikely they ignored Taiwan cities. Ahyangyi (talk) 02:54, 15 September 2017 (UTC)

Add Portland, Oregon to list of Gamma - (minus) global cities. 52.36.180.74 (talk) 21:23, 14 August 2017 (UTC)

Not done: please provide reliable sources that support the change you want to be made. Their most recent study does not list Portland as a Gamma- city. nihlus kryik (talk) 21:29, 14 August 2017 (UTC)
Correct, and the article explicitly says: "The following is a list of the cities in the 2016 rankings, as they appear on the GaWC website:[1]". Portland was listed as "Gamma −" in the 2012 rankings but removed in 2016. PrimeHunter (talk) 22:49, 14 August 2017 (UTC)

What Happened To The Tables?

Strange that the tables have been removed, was there any reason given for the change? Roland Of Yew (talk) 10:35, 6 December 2017 (UTC)

Tables greatly improve the usability of the data in analysis tools or scripts. The GaWC study city lists should be in a table(s) unless there is a compelling reason not to. CReading (talk) 03:24, 11 September 2018 (UTC)

Should Reference 12 be removed?

The page referenced ("The Top 10 most powerful cities in the world". Yahoo! India Finance. 11 May 2012.) does not appear to support the section it is applied to. The page appears to no longer have the Top 10 list. CReading (talk) 03:47, 11 September 2018 (UTC)

Flag of HK or China?

Salut! I'm wondering about Hong Kong gaining the flag of China here while the Hong Kong page flies its own flag? I didn't want to just flip it back (as I imagined the HK populace would prefer, and I see someone has). I'm just wondering which is most correctly displayed on this wiki? -RFT42 (talk) 01:53, 2 December 2018 (UTC)

The Constitution states the country flag ranks above the SAR flag, but Wikipedia is biased anyway. They like to push Hong Kong's special identity as much as possible. And you're wrong that the HK populace would prefer the flag. The protesters and the separatists paid by the NED are not the majority, but Western media likes to portray it that way.--2001:16B8:3176:2600:B112:F653:79C:B84E (talk) 23:11, 22 October 2020 (UTC)

Jakarta is not in India

Jakarta's flag is set to India's flag; Jakarta is the capital of Indonesia. Can someone fix this? Baraaorabi (talk) 19:15, 17 April 2019 (UTC)

It was part of a series of edits by Mario A. Castro-Rojas which also placed cities in wrong groups, e.g. moving Sydney from Alpha+ to Alpha. He may have used the 2016 ranking [3] instead of 2018 [4]. I have reverted it.[5] PrimeHunter (talk) 21:45, 17 April 2019 (UTC)

Hong Kong is listed under "Alpha + cities." Please replace Hong Kong flag with an appropriate flag. 63.241.90.251 (talk) 18:58, 4 September 2019 (UTC)

Not done: please establish a consensus for this alteration before using the {{edit semi-protected}} template. This appears to have gone back and forth between the flags of Hong Kong and the PRC multiple times, so I can't really call it an uncontroversial improvement. ‑‑ElHef (Meep?) 19:23, 4 September 2019 (UTC)

Weird wording under "Global Cities Initiative"

This sentence is worded weird: "The Global Giants classification includes wealthy, extremely large metro areas that the largest cities from developed nations."

Resonance Consultancy Ranking Missing From ‘summary of indexes’

This is really important because it then makes London by dint of calculation the highest ranking not New York. I’ll wait a couple of days for feedback and then if there are no objections update accordingly. Inadvertent Consequences (talk) 09:17, 8 April 2021 (UTC)

Tables that are original research or unsourced

The "Ranks of major cities in the world" table was entirely unsourced and has been removed. The "Global major cities with data" table was original research, with columns that were either poorly sourced or unsourced, and it has also been removed. —Jade Ten (talk) 20:42, 28 May 2021 (UTC)

Thanks! I also removed the "overall ranking" column because it was original research or unsourced. Should we also remove the map? I don't understand why some cities are smaller and/or in another color, it seems to be original research and in any case I don't think it's useful. A455bcd9 (talk) 10:07, 29 May 2021 (UTC)
Sure. There’s already a GaWC map. —Jade Ten (talk) 17:45, 29 May 2021 (UTC)

Rome and AT Kearney Index

I would like to point out that in the 2020 AT Kearney Global Cities Index, Rome is at number 37 in the ranking, as shown in the Annex C, p. 23.

History of Global Cities

Shouldn't this article include some former Global Cities, for example Florence was the place to be during the Renaissance. Athens is another example. ― TaltosKieronTalk 22:02, 20 September 2021 (UTC)

Summary of Indices table - listing order

The order of the cities listed in the Summary of Indices table, appears to be a composite of the ranking in the nine columns, but there is no explanation, and also no (first) column displaying the overall ordinal ranking (1-25). Is the list arranged in order of the average (arithmetic mean) of the ranking in the nine columns? Blainster (talk) 17:27, 8 February 2022 (UTC)

The list of summary of indexes has now been cut to only ten cities with a very unconvincing introduction. This creates inconvenience for viewers looking for a more elaborate list. Supports are needed to restore the list to include 38 cities as before. 胡家禎 (talk) 16:15, 20 June 2022 (UTC)
