Why was she buried at West Point?[edit]

Clicking on the Find a Grave link gets you a photo of her gravestone with her name and "His Wife" beneath it. So her husband must be buried there, and though a doctor must have been a WP graduate. But that's a lot of assumptions, and speaks to the inadequacy of this article. Addendum - a NY Times article here - http://select.nytimes.com/gst/abstract.html?res=F50E1FFD355F127A93C4A8178ED85F458785F9&scp=1&sq=Glenda%20Farrell&st=cse - notes that she is the only member of her profession buried at West Point, but you have to pay to get the whole article. OK, I found it here: http://www.nytimes.com/1991/06/28/obituaries/dr-henry-ross-89-eisenhower-s-chief-of-health-in-war.html?scp=30&sq=Glenda%20Farrell&st=cse. Her husband, Dr. Henry Ross, was indeed a West Point grad and was "chief of the public health section of Gen. Dwight D. Eisenhower's command in Europe in World War II." It also says he married Farrell in 1940, not 1941. Sigh. I'd fix the part of the entry about her burial at West Point but don't know how to do cites or references because I don't do it enough to remember how. Marriages?[edit]

In the photo box at the top it says she was married to Thomas Richards from 1921-29 and Dr. Henry Ross from 1941-71. The Richards link is to several Thomas Richards's, one of whom was a film editor born in 1899 - so it's likely that he was her husband, especially since her son Tommy Farrell was born in Oct. 1921 - reasonable that he should be named after his dad, though it also means his mom was only 17 when he was born. (I corrected his description as a still-living (the verb "is") "club entertainer" to B-Western sidekick, since that's in Tommy Farrell's bio.) But in the section on Glenda's personal life, it doesn't mention Richards at all, and instead lists a guy named Durant - who isn't in the list of spouses up top. What's more, the Henry Ross link in the photo box is to an entirely different Henry Ross, so I took it out. But really, this is a pretty shoddy article. Year of birth (again)[edit]

There are conflicting sources on Ms. Farrell's date of birth (as noted previously on this talkpage), and it has once again become an issue. Reliable sources that support the 1904 date of birth include The LA Times, TCM and The New York Times. Reliable sources that state she was born in 1901 include Arizona Daily Star, Muskogee Phoenix.

However, as the Oklahoma Historical Society notes, "Noted actor Glenda Farrell (her real surname), was born on June 30, 1904 (U.S. Censuses of 1910 and 1920 report 1900 as birth year; headstone reports birthday as January 30, 1904), in Enid, Oklahoma, to Charles and Minnie Farrell." Her SSA record (which cannot be used directly per WP:BLPPRIMARY) seems to support this, as Cliff Aliperti in Immortal Ephemera states (with links to primary sources): "Glenda Farrell was born in Enid, Oklahoma on a date typically reported to be June 30, 1904, but the research of Hardwicke Benthow points to that date actually coming a few years earlier, in 1901. The 1920 and 1940 censuses appear to back up Benthow’s assertion."[3]

I think this might be a case where WP:CONFLICTING comes into play, which states: "If two reliable sources offer contradicting information on a subject and none of them can be demonstrated unreliable, then an article should cite both." Wikipedialuva (talk) 05:19, 2 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

To clarify, WP:BLPPRIMARY is, as the name implies, part of the BLP policy, which does not apply to Glenda Farrell since she has been dead for over 50 years. However, I have generally seen primary sources for records like biographical information (living or dead) challenged. Perhaps someone who is more familiar with the reference policies can add if, in fact, records like DOBs from SSA are acceptable for non-BLP articles.
