Date?[edit]

>Straparola's main work is two-volume collection....

Is there a date for this, even an approximate one? Thank you. Rissa, copy editor (talk) 21:16, 8 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]

R. Bottigheimer has Straparola's The Facetious Nights published in two volumes in 1551 & 1553; then reprinted in 1898 (trans. W. G. Waters). [Bottingheimer, Ruth. Fairy Tales: A New History. Albany, N.Y.: State Unv. of New York Press, 2009. Print. P143.]
surlalunefairytales.com has the work republished in 1901. [http://www.surlalunefairytales.com/facetiousnights/foreward.html Marithong (talk) 03:08, 25 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Note in the section "Effect on Later Writers[edit]

the warning against the possibility of Straparola being the originator of all the plots in The Pleasant Nights seems justified. some of the plots may have come from the 11th, 12th, or 13th century Europe and the ancient world. Marithong (talk) 03:06, 25 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Regarding Whether or Not Straparola's Work Contains the Oldest Know Written Form of the Fairy Story[edit]

if there are references to older written works (older than 1550) that contain fairy stories, as they are know today, the listing of these references would be greatly appreciated. the resemblances of motif patterns in plots, and whether and how these define a genre, appear to be a major problem in defining what constitutes originality or whether or not a story is a fairy tale. Citation style update notice[edit]

I want any interested editor to know I am in the midst of updating the references in the article from plan flat bare references to citations and short footnotes. I am retaining the original look and feel as best I can. This will take some time as I am on and off wikipedia in spare time from other work and life claims upon my attention. I hope to finish within a day or two. —¿philoserf? (talk) 14:43, 29 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
