detto Cinthio[edit]

Who on earth decides how he's better known? His name is "Giovanni Battista Giraldi" (or "Giambattista Giraldi"), detto "Cinzio" or detto "Cynthio" or detto Cinthio, et caetera ad infinitum. In short, the guy's actual name is Giovanni Battista Giraldi, known as Cynthio. To say he is known as Cinthio is a bit weak. Safebreaker (talk) 20:38, 27 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

'Cinthio' is the commonest English rendering of his pen-name and he is usually referred to by this name in English writing about Renaissance literature.
  • Cinthio + Giraldi = 19,100 google hits
  • Cinzio + Giraldi = 16,000 google hits
  • "Giovanni Battista Giraldi" = 2,980 hits
  • Cynthio + Giraldi = 438 google hits
  • Cynthius + Giraldi = 442 google hits
However, I was mistaken in thinking 'Cinthio' was a single-word name; in fact he appended it to the end of his birth name. In the circumstances it's probably simplest to return the page to where it was... :(
