I would like to work on this page by giving a more broad definition of giant tortoise, explaining islands giant-ism, migration to islands, and giving examples of the species located on each of the islands around the world where giant tortoises live. Merge[edit]

This article kind of goes over the same ground as Galápagos tortoise and Aldabra Giant Tortoise. Now I'm not pretending to be an expert on giant tortoises, but I think something needs to be merged :-) Richard W.M. Jones 19:30, 15 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Well I should not merge it with just the Galapagos Giant Tortoise, because there are more giant tortoise species in the world on different places. Several became recently extinct after human settelment, for example on Mauritius, Réunion and Rodrigues. Maybe it can be transformed into a disambiguation page (non-article pages containing no content, that only refer users to other Wikipedia pages). Pmaas 16:10, 25 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Indonesian species[edit]

The lead mentions species in Indonesia, but all the listed species are from the Seychelles and Mascarenes? Is it possible these are referring to ones extinct for thousands of years (e.g. since arrival of man 50,000 years ago)?TCO (talk) 05:41, 13 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Researched it. the Indonesian turtles have not been around for 100,000 years. they are more comparable to other exctinct species like in India or the Americas. Not Mascarene or Seychelles or Galapagos turtles. [2] TCO (talk) 05:52, 13 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Also Manouria Sondaari a member of the same genus, but this one is extinct. More listed here, giant tortoise is rather a weak term - the definition in that link is something with a max carpace length of 30cm or more. Regards, SunCreator ^(talk) 15:27, 13 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Size Comparison[edit]

The article should have at least one picture/photo depicting just how large these tortoises are either in comparison to a common tortoise (garden pet thing) or a human (I think there are a couple with Attenborough.Angry Mustelid (talk) 17:23, 12 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Not a taxonomically correct article[edit]
