Pronunciation (Transcription) of Ghidra: ‘dʒ’ or ‘d'[edit]

Hey all. Just looking for input to reach consensus on how to transcribe the pronunciation of Ghidra.

I believe that the pronunciation in the video announcing Ghidra is properly transcribed as /ˈɡiːdʒrə/ and not /ˈɡiːdrə/.

The reason why I believe this is because it is the same sound as the ‘j’ in jump, from what I hear. The ‘j’ in jump is notated as the affricate dʒ.

Example: https://www.oxfordlearnersdictionaries.com/us/definition/english/jump_2

Another example is from Wikipedia’s English IPA help page at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Help:IPA/English. The sound should be identical to the two examples given there for the 'dʒ' sound: giant, and badge.

I want to get everyone else’s input to be sure everyone can agree before we change the pronunciation. I changed the pronunciation without first gathering input and that was my mistake. Cheers. Stephenamills (talk) 02:37, 12 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

I don't hear a 'j' sound at all; the second syllable sounds like "drum" with an elongated vowel rather than an 'm'. The official pronunciation respelling, "Gee-druh", also does not feature a 'j' sound. --MindlessXD (talk) 01:17, 19 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I don’t hear a “j” at all either. Apart from the official pronunciation being “Gee-druh” with no “j”s involved, I think it would be safe to assume that the name is modelled after Hydra, so we can compare with Hydra (constellation) and Hydra (genus), and see that both of the pages list transcriptions ending with drə. I would say, the consensus is pretty clear, unless you are willing to change the transcriptions on these two pages as well. Kirelagin (talk) 04:39, 14 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
