Untitled[edit]

This article and many others in and around Herkimer County, New York is continually being vandalized by the addition and reversion to show silly content by a persistent vandal, who has used many different names {see Herkimer village talk), and has been blocked under most of them. Incorporated in 1788, not 1791[edit]

Other references state that the towns of Herkimer and German Flatts were incorporated in 1788. 2602:304:CDA6:51B0:8DEF:2AB:C283:BB67 (talk) 00:32, 22 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Name Clarification[edit]

Is it possible for someone to explain the difference between the place names of German Flats, German Flatts, and Herkimer? The article confuses me a bit. The history section of German Flatts starts by telling about Herkimer, an "area[s] of the Burnetsfield Patent," a statement that is confirmed by looking at diagrams of the Patent. The same paragraph later says that "the village was attacked by French...." What village is it referring to? How does the "area" of Herkimer relate to German Flatts and the "village" in that sentence? — Preceding unsigned comment added by JeffreyMGeorge (talkcontribs) 20:13, 22 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Clarification regarding place names[edit]

The cited raid occurred on the north side of the river, in the German Flats District, not within the boundaries of the future town of German Flatts. There were no incorporated towns in the western Mohawk Valley at that time. A survey by Albany County, preparing for the 1788 formation of the towns of Herkimer and German Flatts (2 "t"'s this time) had placed Herkimer on the south side of the river, where General Herkimer lived, and German Flatts on the north side. A bureaucratic error occurring before the resolutions were passed reversed the names. It was too late for correction, so those town names stuck. Probably the best reference for the Mohawk Valley is "So It Was Written, A Time of Terror, Part II", by A. Joyce Berry. 2602:304:CDA6:51B0:2CC5:61B2:3A39:5A6F (talk) 22:22, 24 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]
